A former UFC fighter who met with an unfortunate accident this year has now provided a detailed insight into the same. The 25-year-old also issued a word of advice to other fighters and people who train in any sort of physical-contact martial art.
The fighter in question is Brazil's Mateus Mendonca, a native of Maranhao. Per Ag Fight, he suffered a fractured p*nis during a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) training session. In an interview with Ag Fight, Mendonca has now detailed the buildup to the incident and its aftermath.
Mendonca recalled spending the holidays at his mother's house and training Jiu-Jitsu in his hometown of Maranhao. Apparently, he suffered the p*nis fracture during a Jiu-Jitsu session at his teacher's gym a day before he returned to Sao Paulo, and it was diagnosed later on. 'Bocao' stated:

"During the second roll, I went to roll with Bruno and he hit my private parts with his knee when I was trying to pass the guard. I felt an incredible amount of pain and ran to the bathroom. It started to burn. But then the pain went away and I kept going.
"When I was already here [in Sao Paulo], a month later, training normally, without pain, I started to notice some problems. I started to move and there was a lump. So I went to the hospital. When I got there, the doctor did an exam and immediately transferred me to another hospital for surgery."
Additionally, Mendonca cited the mishap as an example of the dangers of training without safety gear -- a protective cup (aka groin guard/protective guard).
Mendonca implied that most fighters generally don a cup only when competing in a fight and not during training or sparring. Nevertheless, he advised that athletes should use a cup during any sort of physical training/competition.
Former UFC fighter Mateus Mendonca vows to return stronger in the wake of p*nis injury
Mateus Mendonca reportedly underwent surgery on Thursday, December 19, 2024, and would likely be out of action for around two months. He drew attention to the financial challenges precipitated by the injury, as he's missing out on time from MMA competition and from his job of teaching BJJ.
Living in a rented apartment in Sao Paulo, with his partner, daughter, and nephew, Mendonca noted that he's organizing a raffle with some of the UFC items he possesses to help meet medical and miscellaneous expenses. Furthermore, he aims to work his way back to the UFC by the end of 2025.
A member of the Chute Boxe Diego Lima team, 'Bocao' is an alum of Dana White's Contender Series and competed on the UFC's main roster thrice, losing each time.
After his UFC exit, he returned to the win column, securing a submission victory over Luan Matheus at Centurion FC 23 in October 2024. Mendonca (11-3 MMA, 0-3 UFC) addressed his recent injury and other developments in an Instagram post. He particularly underscored that he'll recover and then return to MMA competition stronger than ever.
