Derek Brunson voiced concerns about the UFC's scoring system in light of Jared Cannonier's split decision win over Sean Strickland on Saturday night. Judges Derek Cleary and Junichiro Kamijo scored the closely contested affair in favor of Cannonier, while judge Sal D'Amato scored it 49-46 in favor of Strickland.

Brunson questioned how a polarizing score like 49-46 could be given to opposing parties in the same fight by different judges. Labeling it a 'Comedy', Brunson called for a 'real scoring system' for UFC fights. The 38-year-old wrote on Twitter:

"Comedy in judging . 49-46 one person , 49-46 other person . Too subjective and opinionated. Can we get a real scoring system … #UFCVegas66"

Strickland outnumbered Cannonier in terms of total strikes as well as significant strikes as per the UFC's stats. 152 of the 157 strikes landed by Strickland were deemed significant compared to Cannonier's 141, which is also the total number of strikes landed by 'The Killa Gorilla'. However, Cannonier's striking could be called more precise landing 45% of his shots, compared to Strickland's 38%.

Derek Brunson suffered a brutal TKO loss to Jared Cannonier in his last outing in an essential number-1 contender fight, snapping a five-fight winning streak. Brunson recently withdrew from a bout against Jack Hermansson, scheduled for December 3, due to an undisclosed injury.

Jared Cannonier is looking to make another title bid

The judges scoring the fight in favor of Jared Cannonier had him winning four rounds. 'The Killa Gorilla' himself was confident of having won at least three rounds and the fight after seeing the damage he had inflicted on his opponent's face.

However, Cannonier, in his post-fight octagon interview, gave credit to Strickland's distance management. Having successfully bounced back from a failed title bid against Israel Adesanya, the 38-year-old is looking to make a another title run if not an immediate bid for gold. Cannonier said in his post-fight interview:

"I thought I had it 3 to 2 . You saw the blood on his face. I thought I did enough... I wouldn't say he was tricky, but he's got a very good eye for that distance. He's done so much sparring and he's been doing this for so long. He was able to maintain a good distance and not just walk forward like a zombie... Anybody who gets me closer to the title fight or the title fight is what we're shooting for [next]"
