MMA fighters and fans from around the world have been left shocked at the distressing scenes during Friday night's Fury FC 76 main event between Edgar Chairez and Gianni Vazquez.

After a back-and-forth contest, Chairez locked Vazquez in a triangle submission in the fourth round. Vazquez briefly attempted to break free but swiftly fell unconscious before he could tap.

The worrisome scenes came next as referee Frank Collazo failed to notice that Gianna Vazquez was unconscious and continued to stare at the fighters whilst Edgar Chairez choked his opponent. The situation got worse as Chairez soon transitioned into an armbar, which lasted until Vazquez regained consciousness and managed to signal to the referee that he was done.

Watch the shocking moment shared by MMA journalist Alex Behunin on Twitter:

MMA fans have been reacting to the scenes on Twitter, with one fan suggesting referee Frank Collazo's performance didn't make former UFC referee Mario Yamasaki "look so bad anymore":

"Mario Yamasaki doesn't look so bad anymore now does he"

Another fan suggested that Collazo should be arrested for attempted manslaughter:

"That ref should be charged with attempted manslaughter I'm not even joking"

Twitter user @hobmarLBC also found fault with Gianni Vazquez's corner and believes they should have known when to throw in the towel:

"At that point the corner needed to throw in that towel to save their fighter"

Cory Sandhagen on what a win over Marlon Vera would do for his MMA career

Cory Sandhagen is set to face fellow bantamweight contender Marlon Vera in the main event at UFC San Antonio this weekend.

The bout pits the No.5-ranked Sandhagen against the No.3-ranked 'Chito', with Vera currently on the finest run of his career. 'The Sandman', who turned around the first two-fight skid of his career last year when he defeated Song Yadong, believes a victory over the Ecuadorian will be the catalyst for a potential run at the title.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Cory Sandhagen stated that if he is victorious over 'Chito', he wants to face another top-level MMA fighter in Merab Dvalishvili and believes that the fight should be a No.1 contender's bout:

"I wish it was for a title shot [but] I don't know that it's going to be, to be honest. I think O'Malley has been promised that after the Cejudo-Sterling fight, so I think it's going to be me coming for that No.1 spot against Merab and that's what I'll be asking for. I know that Merab is a down fighter, his last fight was super inspiring to me... It was incredible [Merab's win over Petr Yan]. Performances like that are awesome... It's the type of guy that I want to fight."
