"No matter how powerful your weapon is... they both will fire their last shot" - Chael Sonnen argues whether Jon Jones still has the motivation to compete

Chael Sonnen has weighed in on Jon Jones' motivation to compete again inside the UFC octagon. 'The American Gangster' recently uploaded a YouTube video where he discussed Bones' comeback. With the help of a gun analogy, Sonnen said that Jones needed the right motivation to return to action. Otherwise, it could prove dangerous for him.

Sonnen added that according to him, 'Bones' had gotten the break required to refresh his mind and is properly motivated to fight again:

"No matter how powerful your weapon is, a .22 versus a .44, they both got a clip. They both will fire their last shot. No matter how great your .44 is, and the other guy's got a .22, if he's got a couple of rounds left and you're empty, you got a problem. One way to solve that problem is to take a break... You gotta rest your mind... Does that take three days, three weeks, three months or in Jon's case, three years? Either way, whatever it took, I think he's probably recharged that battery. I think he wants to do this again."

Jones has been out of action for nearly three years. The former light heavyweight champion's last octagon outing was at UFC 247 in February 2020. The 35-year-old took on Dominick Reyes in a light heavyweight title fight and defeated him via unanimous decision in a razor-close fight. 'Bones' later relinquished the title and announced that he would be moving up to heavyweight.

Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen have shared the octagon in the past

After losing to Anderson Silva for the second time at UFC 148, Chael Sonnen was offered a unique opportunity by the UFC. 'The American Gangster' got the chance to move up a weight class and challenge Jon Jones for the light heavyweight belt at UFC 159 in 2013.

'Bones' made light work of Sonnen that night and finished him via TKO in the opening round. Sonnen only competed twice in the UFC after this encounter and then parted ways with the promotion.

But the fight did not mark the end of the rivalry between the two. From time to time, Jones and Sonnen keep poking fun at each other and keep firing multiple personal insults on social media.
