Veteran Australian fighter Reece McLaren believes that if he wins in his scheduled match against Jarred Brooks of the United States next week, a shot at the vacant ONE flyweight MMA world title should be next for him.
'Lightning' moved to highlight this ahead of his showdown against interim strawweight MMA world champion Brooks at ONE Fight Night 26: Lee vs. Rasulov on Dec. 6 at the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. The two will collide in a flyweight MMA joust.
Speaking to ONE Championship in an interview, Reece McLaren, the No. 3 contender in the flyweight lane, shared that a victory over a world champion like 'The Monkey God' should strengthen his standing as a top-tier fighter and bid for a title shot.
The 33-year-old CMBT Training Centre affiliate said:
"I feel like I should be fighting for a worlfd title. If that's not the case, then this stamps my name on that top-tier list for the next title contender by taking out a current world champion."
Both McLaren and Brooks are eyeing a win at ONE Fight Night 26 with the hope of securing a shot at the vacant flyweight belt left by MMA legend and now-retired Demetrious Johnson.
Reece McLaren enters the showdown off a split decision victory in his last fight in May over Hu Yong of China. Brooks, meanwhile, also won in his previous match in August, submitting Cuban Gustavo Balart in the opening round to claim the interim strawweight world title.
ONE Fight Night 26 will be aired live and for free in U.S. primetime to North American fans with an active Amazon Prime Video subscription.
Reece McLaren says size should work to his advantage over Jarred Brooks
Being the bigger fighter and more seasoned in the flyweight class, Reece McLaren said he has the edge over Jarred Brooks in their showdown at ONE Fight Night 26 on Dec. 6 in Thailand.
He made this known in an interview with Sportskeeda MMA, pointing out that while 'The Monkey God' has had his fair share of success against bigger opponents, he does not see such happening when they touch gloves.
"Not against me, anyway. Not a big wrestler like myself."
At ONE Fight Night 26, Brooks will be going up in weight from his traditional strawweight lane. It will his first MMA contest in flyweight under ONE Championship.
