At ONE on Prime Video 5, former double world champion Reinier de Ridder tasted defeat for the very first time in his career. Up to that point, ‘The Dutch Knight’ had produced an incredible run of 16 consecutive wins that had seen him win the ONE middleweight and light heavyweight world championships.

In his most recent world title defense, the Dutchman bit off more than he could chew. De Ridder faced the undefeated ONE interim heavyweight world champion Anatoly Malykhin, who proved to be too much for ‘The Dutch Knight.’

With a devastating first-round knockout, Malykhin took Reinier de Ridder’s double-world champion status for himself. Now that he has some time to recover from the fight, de Ridder has been analyzing what he could’ve done better.

In an interview with the South China Morning Post on YouTube, the reigning ONE middleweight world champion spoke about the size difference between him and Malykhin on fight night:

“Not even just to strategize but he came down from heavyweight and was probably around 105 kilos in the [circle]. It’s not that easy to put on weight, man. Maybe in the [circle] if I was lucky, I was 96 kilos. That’s a pretty big gap and he’s a power puncher and he did very well.”

Reinier de Ridder sizes himself up against upcoming adversary Tye Ruotolo

In his upcoming contest inside the circle, the size advantage is on the side of ONE middleweight world champion Reinier de Ridder. After his loss to Anatoly Malykhin at the end of last year, de Ridder is taking a short break from MMA to compete in a submission grappling contest that has been talked about for some time.

At ONE Fight Night 10 on Prime Video, ‘The Dutch Knight’ will face Tye Ruotolo, one of the very best submission grapplers on the planet. Reinier de Ridder’s grappling has been his standout attribute throughout his MMA career, using his submission skills to go 16-0 with two world championship reigns right up until his last fight against Malykhin.

In an interview with ONE Championship, the Dutchman spoke about the matchup:

“I have the physical advantage. I am heavier and longer. He might have a bit of technical advantage because he’s a pure grappler. I think it’s going to be a very exciting match.”

‘The Dutch Knight’ is unquestionably one of the best grapplers in MMA, with four of his seven ONE Championship wins coming via submission. That being said, he will need to use any advantage that he has in the contest if he is going to compete with one of Andre Galvao’s greatest students, Tye Ruotolo.

ONE Fight Night 10 is set for May 5 at 1stBank Center in Colorado. The entire card will be available live and for free to all Prime Video subscribers in North America.
