Sean O'Malley is excited to don the old UFC gloves when he enters the octagon this weekend at UFC 316 in a rematch against reigning UFC bantamweight kingpin Merab Dvalishvili.
The new UFC gloves, introduced in 2024 to reduce injuries and eye pokes, were abandoned by the promotion because of poor feedback and subpar results. The old pair returned full-time starting UFC Vegas 102. The promotion's original plan to reintroduce the old gloves full-time was in the works, and the manufacturers were given time to meet the demand.

Sean O'Malley promises "different fight" against Merab Dvalishvili
Sean O'Malley has stayed out of the octagon after losing his bantamweight strap to Merab Dvalishvili last year at UFC 306 by unanimous decision. 'Suga' has been focused on a stricter lifestyle as he plans to reclaim his lost glory in the rematch.
O'Malley has to show spotless takedown defense against the Georgian if he wants the fight to go in his favour this time, despite 'The Machine' previously telling Kevin Iole that he plans to strike with the challenger and hopes to find a finish.
"Sean will make some adjustments, he may stop my takedowns... I'm planning to strike with him and keep up and challenge my striking with another top opponent... I'm also looking for a finish in this fight."
