Three years after Cain Velasquez's UFC career came to an end, he was arrested on charges of first-degree attempted murder in February 2022.

The former UFC heavyweight champion allegedly chased after a vehicle carrying a man who was out on bond after being charged with sexually assaulting his son at a daycare facility and rammed the car before firing at the man and hitting his stepfather.

In addition to the first-degree attempted murder charge, Velasquez has been charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of assault with a firearm, one count of discharging a firearm from a vehicle, one count of shooting at a vehicle, and one count of carrying a loaded firearm with the intent to commit a felony.

Velasquez was initially deemed a risk to public safety and was denied bond on two occasions. After eight months in jail, he was granted a $1 million bond and placed on house arrest.

Following his release, a judge ruled that Velasquez could travel to Tempe, Arizona to participate in a wrestling event in December 2022, however, he was accompanied by authorities. The former UFC star was allowed to participate without his ankle monitor and his team won the match. It is unclear if Velasquez has plans to compete in the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide promotion in 2023.

Cain Velasquez's UFC career: Chael Sonnen labels former heavyweight champion 'scariest fighter in MMA history'

Cain Velasquez had a storied mixed martial arts career that saw him capture the heavyweight title on two separate occasions. Former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger Chael Sonnen recently shared that he believes 'Cardio Cain' is the scariest fighter of all-time, stating:

"Scariest fighter in MMA history - I had, with a pretty sizable gap, Cain Velasquez. He had the whole bit. He lad the look. He had the eyes. He had the jawline. He had the stoicness. He had the rumors and reputation. He had the work ethic."

Sonnen continued:

"He had the record. He had the knockouts. He had the collegiate resume, but there was something scary about a big guy that had the level of conditioning. We don’t see that very often. Not that level, not where they can be on you that hard, non-stop."

Velasquez retired from mixed martial arts in 2019 with a record of 14-3, with 12 of his victories coming via knockout.
