Andrea Dovizioso: A Brief Biography

Andrea Dovizioso

Andrea Dovizioso is an Italian professional motorcycle driver currently racing for the Ducati Team. Dovizioso does not have a MotoGP World Championship to his name yet. However, he came agonisingly close to capturing the title during the 2017 season.

125cc and 250cc Class

The thirty-two-year-old Italian driver made his professional racing debut in 2001 riding Aprilia. Dovizioso moved to Honda the following year and led the team to glory three years later in 2004, securing 1 podiums and 5 wins. The 2004 125cc championship is his only championship title till date.

The Italian rode in the 250cc class the following three years, finishing third, second and second in the championship respectively, picking up four wins in the process. This ensured his move to the premium class.

MotoGP Class

Impressive performances in his first MotoGP season riding for the JiR Team Scot MotoGP team prompted a move to the Repsol Honda team. Dovizioso took his first MotoGP victory at the iconic Silverstone circuit at the 2009 British Grand Prix. The Italian failed to win any races during the next two years with the team. However, he managed to finish the 2011 MotoGP season in the third place.

After a one-year stint with Monster Yamaha Tech3, the Italian moved to the Ducati team in 2013. His win-less streak continued with the Ducati team and had to wait till the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix to secure a win. He also managed five podiums that year and ended the season in the fifth place.

Massive improvements to the Ducati vehicle in the 2017 season saw a change of fortunes for the Italian rider unlike his new teammate Jorge Lorenzo. The 2017 season is Dovizioso’s most successful season till date with eight podiums and six wins. He finished the season in the second place, 37 points behind Marc Marquez.

Andrea Dovizioso continued his partnership with the Italian team and currently rides the Ducati Desmosedici GP18 alongside Jorge Lorenzo.
