Igor Lichnovsky: A Brief Biography

Born on 7th March 1994 in Penaflor, Chile, Igor Lichnovsky was nicknamed El Polaco who plays for Mexican club Cruz Azul, as a central defender. Igor Lichnovsky Osorio is a Chilean professional right footed centre back defender.


Background


Igor joined the Club Universidad de Chile's youth team when he turned eight, and debuted in the Campeonato Nacional on 20th November 2011, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0-0 home draw against Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica for the Clausura in which he was also voted as Man of the match.


The defender played with the Portuguese side's B team until he was loaned to Sporting in January 2016 where he made his La Liga debut on February 17th, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 loss to Barcelona.


Lichnovsky returned to Spain on 2nd August 2016, joining Segunda Division team Real Valladolid on another loan. He currently represents Club Necaxa.


Debut


On 14th November 2014 at the Estadio CAP in Talcahuano, Lichnovsky made his international debut with the full side playing the entire 5-0 friendly win with Venezuela.


On 20th November 2011, he made his debut in the Campeonato Nacional, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0-0 home draw against Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica for the Clausura in which he was also voted as Man of the match.


Rise to Glory


Igor Lichnovsky might not be the most well-known footballer in the world, but his rise to prominence with Sporting Gijon has encountered more strife than most.


Lichnovsky was capped by Chile at under-17 and under-20 levels, where he represented Chilean U-20 national team in the 2013 South American Youth Championship, guiding his team qualify to the 2013 FIFA World Cup in Turkey.


Lichnovsky's good performances for both Universidad and the Chilean national youth teams attracted interest from English club Chelsea, however, nothing came of it.



Club Career


Lichnovsky spent major part of his club career with Universidad Chile where he made 41 appearances and managed to score 4 goals before moving to Porto in June 2014. Due to his impressive performances with Universidad Chile, he caught the attention of the national selectors and was awarded a call up in the Chile youth team.


Lichnovsy signed a four-year contract with FC Porto from Portugal in late June 2014, being initially assigned to the B-team. He appeared 41 times for the B-team and scored 3 goals.


In the following January, he was loaned to Sporting de Gijon until June, when he was again loaned to Valladolid for a season where he scored a goal in 18 caps he wore for his side. After signing with Necaxa in 2017, he has made 29 appearances till now for the club and is expected to perform well in the upcoming matches.


Records


Igor Lichnovsky was the part Universidad de Chile when they lifted Campeonato Nacional in 2011 and 2012. The following season, with his defending skills, he helped his side lift Copa Chile. In 2011, Chile also won Copa Sudamericana in which Igor was part of the winning squad.
