Leander Dendoncker: A Brief Biography

Leander Dendoncker is a Belgian professional footballer who plays for R.S.C Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League. Dendoncker was born on 15th April 1995 in Passendale, Belgium.


Standing 1.89 meters tall, the 22-year-old plays as a defensive midfielder but is capable of playing as a center back. The right-footed player won the Belgian Pro League with Anderlecht in the 2016-17 season.


Background


Dendoncker grew up in the West Flanders Passendale and moved to KSV Roeselare's youth club in 2001.


After a couple of seasons, he moved to Roeselare in 2003 and spent 6 years there. The midfielder played was monitored by RSC Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Standard Liege and KRC Genk and he chose Anderlecht.


Dendoncker impressed the Belgium national team and was drafted into the Belgium under-16 in 2010 season.


Debut


The youth player was allowed to participate during the winter break of the 2012/13 season on stage with the team of trainer John van den Brom. In the 2013 season, he made his debut for Belgium National Cup.


On 21st July 2013, he made his official debut at the age of eighteen-year-old. Dendoncker made his official debut in the Supercup against KRC Genk. He came in as a substitute for Dennis Praet in the 81st minute and went on to win the match 1-0.


He played his first international match for the “Red Devils” against France on 7th June 2015 in the 85th minute.


Rise to glory


On 1st August 2014, he made his competitive debut for the Purple & White against KV Oostende again coming in as a substitute coming in for Aleksandar Mitrović.


He made 30 appearances in the 2014-15 season finding the back of the net on 2 occasions.

In the 2016/17 season, Dendonker played all league matches for RSC Anderlecht. He won both the Belgium Super Cup and Belgium Super League.


He also played at the European level for the club and scored a goal at home against Manchester United in the 86th minute to give his team a 1-1 draw.


Club career


He was playing in the RSC Anderlecht youth setup since 2009 and was called to the first team after 4 years by Besnik Hasi. Club Brugge tried to get him to West Flanders. Dendoncker did not accept the offer and extended his contract until 2016.
