Nacho Fernandez: A Brief Biography

Nacho Fernandez Biography

José Ignacio Fernández Iglesias, popularly known as Nacho Fernandez, is a Spanish footballer born on the 18th of January, 1990 in the capital of Spain - Madrid.

He presently plays for Real Madrid as a central defender but can also be seen fulfilling the roles of right back or left back.

Background

Nacho arrived at the youth systems of Real Madrid in 2001, at the age of eleven after a two year long spell at AD Complutense. He has not left the club since. He started his senior career by playing for the reserve team in 2008-09 in the Segunda B division of Spanish football.

Debut

Nacho had played for the U-17, U19 and the U21 sides of Spain in several tournaments. He made his senior debut for his country in 2013 in a friendly match against Chile, played in Geneva, Switzerland.

He came on as a substitute for his teammate from Madrid, Sergio Ramos and that game ended in a 2-2 draw. Since then he has made 14 appearances for the National team of Spain, with half of them coming in 2017.

Rise To Glory

Nacho made his debut for the senior side as a left back in the La Liga on the 23rd of April, 2011 in a 6-3 away victory against Valencia. He started and played the entire game.

He became an official full-time first team member with a few of his teammates from Castilla at the start of 2013–14 after an announcement made by Jose Mourinho. He received the number 18 shirt after the departure of Raúl Albiol.

By 2017, he also became a regular for the Spanish Men’s National football team. He made 5 appearances in 2016 and 7 in 2017.

Low Points

Nacho has been suffering from type 1 diabetes since he was 11 years old, something that has proven detrimental to his career, but not to a very serious extent.

He also suffers from lack of opportunities when it comes to playing for the first side of Real Madrid due to the intense level of competition from players like Sergio Ramos, Carvajal and Marcelo.

Club Career

Nacho has won several titles whilst playing Real Madrid. These include 1 La Liga, 1 Copa del Rey and most importantly 3 UEFA Champions League titles. He has also shown a knack of scoring goals, even as a defender much like Sergio Ramos.

He scored a brace a year ago against Deportivo in a massive 7-1 victory. He has made over 100 appearances for his boyhood club- Real Madrid.
