Osvaldo Gonzalez: A Brief Biography

Osvaldo Alexis González Sepúlveda is a Chilean footballer who currently plays for the Mexican club Toluca. Born on 10th August 1984, the 33-year-old center-back is popularly known as Rocky. The right-footed player made his international debut for Chile in 2008 and has since made 14 appearances for his country.


Background


Born in Concepción, Chile, González is a youth product of the Universidad de Concepción. He began playing in the club's youth squad and later debuted for the senior squad in 2005, and soon after became a regular starter.


Debut


He was signed by Universidad de Concepción in the 2005 winter transfer window.


He made his debut for the club in the same season and was subsequently loaned out to Figueirense the same year where he was not part of a single game the whole season and was released at the end of the season.


On 30th January 2008, González made his official debut for the Chile national team against South Korea, as a 92nd-minute replacement replacement for Eduardo Rubio.


Rise to glory


González transferred to the Universidad de Chile for £315k in the 2008 summer transfers with a 4-year contract.


He was an integral part in making Universidad de Chile the Primera División Championship in 2009 as they won their first trophy in five years.


In January 2010, he signed for Deportivo Toluca of the First Division of Mexico as a right back and won the title of champion of the 2010 Bicentennial Tournament.


In the summer of 2011, he returned to Universidad de Chile and won the Chilean Championship and the 2011 South American Cup in the very first season of his second stint.


He scored the equalizer goal of the game against Vasco da Gama in the semifinals of the 2011 Copa Sudamericana, which Universidad de Chile finished as champion.


On June 2012, he was called up for the qualifying matches against Bolivia and Venezuela. Both matches ended in a 2-0 victory for Chile with González playing the whole 90' minutes.


His last game at senior level it disputed the 28 of January of 2015, under the technical direction of Jorge Sampaoli, in a friendly played at the Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua against the United States, which culminated in victory 3-2 in favor of the Red".


In June of 2016, the return of the central defender to be confirmed Deportivo Toluca, for a period of two years.


Low points


On May 15 2010, he received two yellow cards in the semifinal of the second leg of El Bicentenario 2010.


Club career


Osvaldo Gonzalez was started his club career with Universidad de Concepción in 2005. After 3 seasons featuring in 84 matches and scoring a goal for the club in the league, he moved to Universidad de Chile in the summer of 2008. He featured in 68 matches and found the net on three occasions in his one and a half year spell at the club. He was then sold to Mexican club Toluca for a reported £1.17million.


He went on to play 46 matches and score 4 goals in his Mexican club which made Universidad de Chile bring him back to the club.


He attracted offers from European clubs, such as Malaga and Fiorentina stayed with Universidad de Chile till 2015 when Toluca signed him for an undisclosed fee.


He then went on to make 37 appearances since 2016.
