Rodrigo Caio: A Brief Biography

Rodrigo Caio Biography

Rodrigo Caio Coquette Russo popularly known as Rodrigo Caio is a Brazilian footballer, born on 17th August 1993 at Dracana near Sao Paulo. The right-footed footballer plays mainly as the centre-back for his national team and club team, São Paulo FC. He occasionally performs as a defensive midfielder. He is reckoned as one of the most promising centre-backs for his ability to win duels.

Background

At the age of 12, Caio joined youth academy of Brazilian side, Sao Paulo. He first came into prominence when he helped his side to lift the U-18 Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in 2010.

He was escalated to the senior team in May 2011. But his first appearance for the senior team did not go well as Sao Paulo sunk to a 5-0 defeat against Corinthians in a league game in June 2011.

He played 8 matches in 2011. Caio had dodged Neymar well until 53rd-minute before he was shown a red card in a Paulista A1 encounter against Santos in March 2012.

Debut

Few days prior to Copa America Centenario 2016, Caio earned his first international cap in a friendly match against Panama in Colorado in May 2016. He came as a 79th-minute substitution and played as the centre-back for the remainder of the match.

Rise to Glory

Caio stood as a pillar in the back of Brazil’s first Olympic Gold in football in Rio 2016. He started in all the matches and missed only 32 minutes in the entire tournament. The Brazilian partnered with Marquinhos to maintain a clean-sheet till the semi-final before conceding the lone goal in the final against Germany. Statically he won more than 70% duels and declared the winner in 85% aerial duels.

Low Points

In mid-2014, Caio suffered a fracture in cruciate ligament against Criciuma and was ruled out for seven months. The injury shook his proposed move to La Liga side Valencia and he failed in the medical test in June 2015.

After his debut, Caio played his second match only in January 2017 in an international friendly against Colombia. The presence of Marquinhos and Miranda in the Brazil defence kept Caio at bay as the 24-year-old Brazilian played only four matches since making his debut in the senior Brazil team.

Club Career

Caio plays for São Paulo FC since 2011 and he signed a four-year contract with his first club in March 2017 to extend his stay in Sao Paulo to 2021. Although, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Sevilla have shown interested on the centre-back; he chose to represent his root club.
