Uwe Seeler is a former German footballer, born on 5 November 1936 in Hamburg, Germany. Seeler played as a centre-forward and flourished in the position.


Seeler is well known for his leadership qualities and his strength in the air with the football.


Background


Seeler‘s father, Erwin Seeler, served for Hamburger SV. Uwe went on to maintain the legacy and played football for the same club. At 12 years of age, Seeler began his youth career at Hamburger SV.


Debut


Seeler played his first match for Hamburg in 1954.


Before turning 18, Seeler had scored four goals for Hamburg in a DFB-Pokal match.


The Italian and the Spanish clubs tried their best to sign him for their teams but Seeler stayed with Hamburg.


During his first season for the club, 1954-55, he scored 28 goals.


Seeler made his debut for the West German national team in the same year.


Rise to Glory


Seeler was the top-scorer in the Bundesliga season in 1963–64. In 1968,


Seeler played a key role to help Hamburg reach the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, he concluded the tournament as the top scorer, as they lost to AC Milan in the final.


Captaincy


Seeler was the captain of both his club team and the national team for numerous years.

Seeler has participated in 1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970 FIFA World Cups. He has scored 137 times in 239 Bundesliga appearances and 43 times in 72 international games for the West German national team.


For Hamburger SV the legend has scored 476 goals. He was awarded the Footballer of the Year in Germany for three years, 1960, 1964, 1970. He was the first player ever to play in 20 World Cup matches.


Retirement


Seeler retired in the year 1970, after playing his last international match against Hungary. Post his retirement, he served as the president of Hamburger SV.
