Fast X has surprised box office pundits by collecting more than $318 million across the world. The debut weekend earnings comprise a drab $67.5 million from the domestic circuit and a solid $251.4 million internationally, The Numbers reported. Helmed by French filmmaker Louis Leterrier, the action thriller has been made on a stellar budget of $340 million.

So, according to The Wrap, the film has to be a real money spinner and earn roughly $800–850 million to be a profitable venture.

The next part after F9 (2021), Fast X was released in 4,042 theaters across the United States and Canada on May 19, 2023, from where it debuted at $67.5 million. This score ensured its win over the commercial window even though critics gave it generally mixed reviews.

Fast X stars eternal family man Vin Diesel as Dominic "Dom" Toretto, Sung Kang, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, John Cena, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Helen Mirren, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, and Nathalie Emmanuel.

Jason “Aquaman” Momoa plays the suave and flamboyant antagonist Dante Reyes, drug lord Hernan Reyes’ son. Hernan was killed in Fast Five (2011) and Dante wants to avenge that by tearing Dom’s family apart.

Fast X performs well globally, China remains top contributor

According to the projections, Fast X was estimated to clock in $65–75 million from the domestic markets. Eventually, during its release week, the number came down to $60 million.

On day 1, the Fast & Furious series’ penultimate installment earned $28 million ($7.5 million from Thursday previews also included), and on the debut weekend, pocketed $67.5 million, in line with the projected score.

Expressing happiness about the collection, Universal’s President of domestic distribution Jim Orr said:

“What a tremendous global debut for this incredible, unique franchise…Audiences were revved up to see their beloved ‘Fast’ family back in theaters with all the spectacular action and familial themes that resonate so well across the globe.”

Fast X, however, fell short of its previous iterations, like F9: The Fast Saga ($70 opening despite COVID-19 imposition), and Furious 7 ($147 million), Forbes pointed out. It also has the fourth-smallest opening in the United States as far as the action genre movies are concerned.

The real contribution for the new launch came in from the global markets, though, with China pouring in a remarkable $78.3 million on the first weekend. Mexico at $16 million, France at $9.6 million, and Brazil at $9.6 million round up the top four among the 84 markets Fast X opened to, Variety stated.

Rightly dubbing the international box office as “the series’ strength,” David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, a California-based movie consulting firm, said:

“These stories of good guys versus bad guys are understood everywhere around the world. This is excellent business for the genre, with outstanding international appeal.”

The $251.4 million international haul has armed Fast X with the title of being this year’s second-largest opening, albeit after the stunner The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which raked in an awesome $377 million on its debut weekend globally. The animated Chris Pratt-led film was in third place this weekend in the domestic ticket window, while Marvel-Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also starring Pratt and Diesel, stood second.

All the aforementioned films are currently running in theaters.
