On 29 April 1945, Hitler completed his final political will and married his long-time mistress, Eva Braun. On April 30, 1945, the vegetarian Hitler had one last quiet lunch, shook hands with the rest of the staff, and committed suicide that afternoon with his wife on the sofa in his private living area. Based on the testimony, both swallowed cyanide tablets and he shot himself in the head.

There are theorists who claim that Hitler and Eva were able to flee to South America, where they lived their lives with their children, but the majority of historians rejected these claims.

Hitler may have chosen to commit suicide, rather than spend his final days fleeing in fear before finally being captured, humiliated, and executed.
