Director James Gunn recently spoke about the challenges of directing his wife Jennifer Holland's kissing scene with co-star John Cena on the final episode of the HBO Max show Peacemaker, which aired on October 9, 2025. For the uninformed, Holland, who has been married to Gunn since 2022, is an actress and model, currently portraying Emilia Harcourt on Peacemaker.James Gunn and Jennifer Holland discussed the technicalities of shooting the scene with fellow actor Steve Agee (who plays John Economos) on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn, which aired on October 10, 2025, on HBO Max's official YouTube channel. Holland admitted that while it might be weird for Gunn to see his wife kiss someone, she always felt that an on-screen kiss between actors felt very "technical," with Gunn agreeing and elaborating on how the shot was set up. The director, who is also the Peacemaker's showrunner and writer, said the scene was "especially technical" as they had to use a Phantom camera to capture the 360-degree shot in slow motion."This was especially technical because we had the Phantom camera and everything was in slow motion and you guys had to go back in a certain way, then you had to come together, then the camera ramps down, means it goes faster...and we had to do it over and over and you're standing on the lazy Susan as we're curling around you," he said. Moreover, James Gunn said he faced an added challenge of having to direct his wife kissing another man in front of 200 to 300 extras, which left him feeling "uncomfortable" before it even happened. However, he added that his discomfort dissipated after rewatching the shot, saying that the sequence produced "some of our best shots ever from the series.""I had to direct you kissing a man in front of like 200/300 extras, more, a lot of them were fans. The whole thing was kind of weird before it happened. I was uncomfortable about it, admittedly. I was like, 'I don't want to do this.' But once we were doing it, I didn't give a s**t...I was looking at the kiss as like, I’m loving it because it’s these beautiful shots. I mean, some of our best shots ever from the series are in that sequence," Gunn said.Jennifer Holland has been part of the Peacemaker series since its first season in 2022. The show follows John Cena's character, Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, after the events of The Suicide Squad (2021). According to People Magazine, this is not the first time Holland has been involved in one of James Gunn's projects. She has also appeared in Superman (2025) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).Jennifer Holland admitted there was "very little" work-life balance in her relationship with James GunnJennifer Holland recently admitted that her marriage to James Gunn had "very little" work-life balance due to the director's dedication to DC. For the uninformed, Warner Bros. Pictures appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios in 2022. Gunn also directed and wrote DC's latest superhero movie, Superman, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, which was released in July 2025. Speaking to People Magazine during the red carpet premiere of Peacemaker season 2 at New York City's AMC Lincoln Square Theater on August 13, 2025, Holland opened up about her husband's dedication to his work, adding that his partnership with DC was his "number one focus right now at this time in his life.""I've not been, in any way, upset or judgmental with James, but I know that his number one focus right now at this time in his life has been taking on this opportunity that he has at DC with 100% full force. I think he's doing that with just every ounce of his being, and he wants to make sure that it's everything that the fans could hope for."James Gunn and Jennifer Holland at the Warner Bros. Premiere Of "The Suicide Squad" (Image via Getty)The actress added that James Gunn was "very committed" to giving fans the best experience with the characters that they've loved for years, adding:"But if anyone could get a little piece of an insider view of what it's like, he just wants to do the characters justice, and he just wants to give it what it deserves for all of these people who've lived with these characters in these comics that they've been reading [and] the characters that they created in their brains and everything...He's very committed to making it the best that he's able to make it."However, Holland also acknowledged that despite James Gunn's devotion towards the fans, "you're always going to disappoint some people, that's just the way it is."The next DC Studios production is Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, and scheduled for release on June 26, 2026. Australian-American director Craig Gillespie (who previously directed I, Tonya and Cruella) will reportedly helm the upcoming DC flick.
