Eddie Munson, the head of the Hellfire Club Dungeons & Dragons group, is the leading suspect and is pursued by the Hawkins High School basketball team. They are led by Jason Carver, who believes that Eddie used demonic abilities to murder Jason's girlfriend, Chrissy Cunningham. Dustin, Max, Lucas, Erica, Nancy, Steve, Robin, and Eddie investigate and learn that the killings were carried out by a powerful being from the Upside Down who they later call “Vecna.”.

The second subplot sees Mike pay a visit to Eleven, Will, and Jonathan at their new house in California. However, because of the events in Hawkins and the danger to her friends, Eleven travels to a hidden facility with Dr. Martin Brenner and Sam Owens to help her regain her powers, while Mike, Will, Jonathan, and his buddy Argyle try to find her.

Finally, the third subplot revolves around Joyce and Murray Bauman, who discover that Hopper may still be alive and imprisoned in a Russian prison camp. The pair is advised to bring money to secure Hopper's release and travel to a Soviet prison camp in Kamchatka, where Hopper and the other convicts are forced to face a Demogorgon captured by the Russians.
