Before being in a relationship with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie first became a single mom by adopting Maddox Chivan in 2001. Chivan was born on August 5, 2001, in Battambang, Cambodia. She came across Chivan while she was filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. She visited an orphanage and felt an instant connection with Maddox after she saw him lying in a box suspended from the ceiling.
During the time she was adopting Maddox Chivan, Angelina Jolie was married to Billy Bob Thornton. However, she still opted out to be a single mom as three months after adopting Chivan, Thornton and Jolie separated. Then in the year 2005, Jolie adopted her second child Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt.

They welcomed their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt on May 27, at the cottage hospital in Swakopmund, Namibia. In 2007, Jolie adopted her fourth child, Pax Thien from an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Pax was born on November 29, 2003, and was adopted by Jolie when he was three years old. Jolie had applied to adopt Thien as a single parent because according to the Vietnamese adoption regulations, unmarried couples cannot co-adopt. After returning back to the US, Pitt legally adopted Thein too.
The following year, during the Cannes Film festival, Jolie confirmed that she was expecting twins. Pitt and Jolie welcomed their twins (fifth and sixth) child, Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline on July 12, 2008.
