Angela Bassett is 64 years old. Angela Evelyn Bassett was born on 16th August 1958 in the United States to Betty Jane (née Gilbert) and Daniel Benjamin Bassett.

Betty was a social worker, while Daniel was the son of a preacher. Her middle name was Evelyn, named after her aunt. Bassett's mother became pregnant with her sister D'nette when Bassett was only ten months old, which made things more difficult for the family. As a result, Bassett was sent to live with her father's sister, Golden, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Despite not having children of her own, Golden loved and was good with children. After her parents' divorce, Bassett, along with her sister, moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, with their mother when she was just four years old.

She did not have any contact with her father for several years until she attended her grandmother's funeral, where she met her half-sister, Jean, who was older than Bassett by a few years. Bassett completed her elementary education at Jordan Park Elementary School and later attended Disston Middle School for seventh grade, which required her to travel outside her neighborhood.

Bassett's breakthrough role came in 1993 when she portrayed Tina Turner in the biographical film “What's Love Got to Do with It”. This outstanding performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her success in this role led to her being offered significant roles such as Betty Shabazz in “Malcolm X” (1992), the mother of The Notorious B.I.G. in “Notorious” (2009), and Amanda Waller in “Green Lantern” (2011).
