She did not have any contact with her father for several years until she attended her grandmother's funeral, where she met her half-sister, Jean, who was older than Bassett by a few years. Bassett completed her elementary education at Jordan Park Elementary School and later attended Disston Middle School for seventh grade, which required her to travel outside her neighborhood.
Bassett's breakthrough role came in 1993 when she portrayed Tina Turner in the biographical film “What's Love Got to Do with It”. This outstanding performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
