Popular actor and director Robert Redford died at age 89 in his hometown of Utah on September 16, 2025. Redford's publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed this in an official statement. In a statement to CNN on September 16, Cindi Berger, Chairman and CEO of Rogers and Cowan PMK, announced:
"Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."
Robert Redford was married to Sibylle Szaggars, a German-born artist and environmentalist. Szaggars's art focuses on the earth and the environment, evoking "a deeper universal consciousness," according to her official website. She met Redford at the Sundance Mountain Resort in 1996. The two married in 2009 and share a 20-year age difference.
Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars do not have any children together. However, Redford has four children from his first marriage to Lola Van Wagenen: Scott, Shauna, James, and Amy Redford. Scott died of sudden infant death syndrome when he was two months old. Redford also lost his son James to cancer in October 2020.
He is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, and children Shauna and Amy Redford.
When Robert Redford claimed his relationship with Sibylle Szaggars was not "colored by success"

In a 2014 interview on a panel for YoungArts Salon, Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars spoke together, revealing details about their relationship. Redford explained that Szaggars did not know much about his films at that time, making their relationship genuine and not "colored by success."
"It was a wonderful beginning of a relationship, because it began as two human beings meeting each other and finding a connection as two human beings, rather than being colored by success."
The actor added that Szaggars being unaware of his career and popularity meant he "started from a more even playing field" and "didn’t have to worry about any agenda." He considered it a "nice way to start" their romance.
Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars tied the knot in a private ceremony with only 30 family members at the Louis C. Jacob Hotel in Hamburg, Germany, in July 2009.
Speaking in the aforementioned panel, Szaggars recalled how she was nervous about meeting Redford for the first time, as she had not seen many of his films. She knew of two films at that time, saying:
"I knew of him. I had seen Jeremiah Johnson, one of my favorite films, and Barefoot in the Park. Oh my God, I don't know any of his films."
Sibylle Szaggars then rented some of Robert Redford's films before meeting him, following the advice of one of the actor's friends. Two days before their dinner, she watched a few minutes of those six or eight films she had, in case he brought it up during their dinner. However, Redford never mentioned them.
"I thought, ‘What if he wants to talk about his movies?’ I have no idea, that would be so embarrassing. I probably would have mixed everything. Of course, he did not talk about it, so I was rescued and saved," Szaggars said.
Robert Redford also shared his wife's passion for the environment, and they worked together on multiple issues. In 2015, Sibylle Szaggars founded The Way of the Rain, which focused on artistic and educational performances aimed at raising awareness about various environmental challenges and protecting the planet.
Redford served as the vice president of the organization. In the same year, the couple received the Princess Grace Foundation-USA’s Prince Rainier III Award in Monaco for their environmental efforts.
They were also honored for their work in 2018 at the Ryerson Woods’ 35th annual Smith Nature Symposium & Benefit. Besides being a prominent environmentalist, Robert Redford is also renowned for his contributions to film and media.
Some of his most notable performances include Barefoot in the Park, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting. The latter film won the Academy Award for Best Film in 1973. Redford's last film was The Old Man & the Gun at the age of 82, which was released in 2018.
