Yes, in the 1970s and 1980s, Squid Game was a very well-liked kids' game in Korea. Children played inside a squid-shaped board that had been drawn on the ground, divided into defense and offense.

The deadly competition that is taking place is obviously fictional, but the games that make up the competition are not. Numerous games, including Red Light, Green Light, Marbles, Dalgona Candy, Tug of War, and Squid Game, among others, are depicted throughout the episodes. These games are popular with children not only in Korea but also in other parts of the world.

Two circles, one at the top and one at the bottom, have been drawn to form a squid-shaped playing field for the Squid Game. A huge triangle cuts across the top circle, while a roughly equal-sized square cuts across the bottom one.

Director of Squid Game Hwang Dong-Hyuk claims that he named the series after the game because it was the most physically demanding children's game at the time and, in his opinion, the most entertaining; it was "the most symbolic children's game to represent the kind of society we live in today."

What are the rules of the original Squid Game?

Children separate themselves into offensive and defensive groups. The offense, which stays outside the boundaries, can only hop around with one foot once the game begins. The defense group is allowed to run everywhere with two feet inside the boundaries of the drawn shapes. The offender can immediately begin using both feet freely if they pass through the center of the triangle and square while outpacing the defense.

The attackers assemble at the squid's entrance as they get ready for the final step. The offense must touch with one foot the small triangle intersection that forms on the head of the squid (intersection of the top circle and triangle) in order for one of the teams to win, while the defense must attempt to force the offense outside of the lines. If one team or both teams succeed in completing their mission, the other team is metaphorically killed.

What is the Squid Game?

The Netflix original South Korean survival drama series Squid Game was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung are among the actors who appear in it.

The show centers on a competition in which 456 participants, all of whom are experiencing extreme financial hardship, put their lives in danger by participating in a series of dangerous children's games in an effort to win a prize of ₩45.6 billion.

Hwang had developed the concept in response to his own early-life financial struggles, the class divide in South Korea, and capitalism. Though he had first drafted it in 2009, he was unable to find a production company to support the concept until Netflix became interested in it around 2019 as part of their effort to broaden their selection of foreign programming.

A series of kid's games are offered as an opportunity to win a sizable cash prize, and Seong Gi-hun, a divorced father and debt-ridden gambler who lives with his ailing mother, accepts the invitation. When he accepts the offer, he is taken to an unidentified location with 455 other players who are all in dire financial straits.

The Front Man, who wears a black mask and a black uniform, oversees the games, while the players are required to wear green tracksuits and are constantly watched over by masked guards wearing pink jumpsuits.

The players quickly learn that dropping a game results in their death, which increases the potential ₩45.6 billion dollar grand prize by ₩100 million for each death. To survive the physical and psychological twists of the games, Gi-hun forms alliances with other players, including his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo and North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok.
