On July 16, The Wall Street Journal reported that billionaire Elon Musk had plans to donate $45 million every month to Trump PAC. On Monday, July 22, in an interview with commentator Jordan Peterson, Musk denied the reports. During the conversation, Musk also added:
"What’s been reported in the media is simply not true. I’m not donating $45 million a month to Trump. What I have done is I have created a PAC, or super PAC, whatever you want to call it. I simply call it the America PAC."
The news outlet further claimed that the hefty donations were flowing through America PAC, which was a new political action committee. Elon Musk also took to X, formerly known as Twitter, where he wrote that while he was donating some amount, it wasn't as much as what was stated by The Wall Street Journal. He further called the reports "ridiculous."
In the tweet, Musk wrote,
"I am making some donations to America PAC, but at a much lower level and the key values of the PAC are supporting a meritocracy & individual freedom."
Meanwhile, netizens had flooded the social media platform, voicing their opinions on the reports, even though Musk claimed they were false.
"When you think you're backing a sure thing but everything changes overnight and you're scared of looking like a total loser," one person said.
"WHAT?????? OMG, the news is funny today," another person wrote.
"Seems there’s been a sudden decrease in excitement by the right wing for the upcoming election," one person added.
Several other netizens took to the internet to talk on the matter.
"Not to mention Elon just figured out that Trump is anti-EV and would enact policies which would hurt Tesla," one user wrote.
"'I don't subscribe to cults of personality' = 'Trump, you in trouble girl'," another person added.
"I love Elon Musk"- Donald Trump stated while praising the billionaire for the alleged $45 million donation, at a rally in Michigan
While the Tesla CEO had denied making any such promises of paying $45 million regularly to support Trump PAC. The former President had already praised him for the same in a campaign rally in Michigan. Trump said:
"I love Elon Musk. We have to make life good for our smart people, and he's as smart as you get. Elon endorsed me the other day, and I read ― I didn’t even know this ― he didn’t even tell me about it, but he gives me $45 million a month."
Recently Elon Musk had an interview with Jordan Peterson for Daily Wire on July 22, where he claimed that the reports weren't true and that he was donating a much smaller amount to the America PAC. He further cited that Republicans weren't fully supportive of "merit and freedom."
During the conversation with Jordan Peterson, Musk added that he believed in the primary principles of America PAC, which meant the promotion of policies that would "make America great in the first place."
The billionaire claimed that he wasn't a MAGA referring to Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again idea), but was a MAG (Make America Greater).
Amid the chaos, it would be difficult to confirm whether Musk had actually not made any such promises before, or if he changed his mind later and decided to not make such huge donations. The Wall Street Journal is yet to respond to Elon Musk's denial of the claims that they made in the article which was published earlier this month.
While the billionaire claimed that he didn't plan on making such heavy donations, he admitted to creating a super PAC, known as the America PAC. For the unversed, a super PAC can raise funds to provide for the regular expenditures of the campaign but don't directly donate money to it.
Unlike a super PAC, a normal PAC has a limitation on the amount of gifts that people can donate, which is $5,000 each year. Earlier this year, in March, Musk posted on X stating that he'd not donate anything to any candidate. While denying the claims of donating $45 million every month, Elon Musk said:
"I don’t prescribe to [a] cult of personality."
He, however, had praised the former President stating that he displayed great "courage", after the alleged assassination attempt at the Pennsylvania rally.
In the interview with Peterson, the businessman was asked the reason behind him switching from voting for the Democrats to choosing Trump. As a response, Elon Musk described the Democratic Party as a "party of censorship."
He further criticized a suit that was filed by the US Justice Department under Biden's administration. It claimed that Musk didn't encourage refugees to apply to his aerospace company SpaceX. The lawsuit was, however, dismissed according to a court order.
