Internet’s latest sensation Aussie B-girl Rachel Gunn, more recognized as Raygun, was caught showing off some of her other moves at the Olympic Village. On Sunday, Portuguese breakdancer Vanessa Marina shared a short clip of Gunn being cheered on by the surrounding crowd on her Instagram Stories.
Gunn kept the internet bustling with her viral breakdancing performance at the Paris Olympics since the weekend. The 36-year-old caught everyone’s attention on Friday after her moves at the event’s debut breakdancing competition were deemed atypical by many.
Though Gunn ultimately could not bag any score from the judges, she got everyone intrigued. As Marina’s post began circulating online, netizens noted that Gunn’s moves at the Olympic Village looked somewhat better than what she demonstrated as breaking at the competition.
One Reddit user commented under a repost of the footage by r/olympics and wondered why Raygun did not dance like that at the event.
The video also made it to X, where the account reposting it called Gunn "the Aussie Jojo Siwa." Others chimed in to leave their thoughts.
"This isn’t horrible for an amateur but she’s supposed to be great," one person wrote.
"she know damn good and well she didn’t do all those moves that the Olympics," said another.
"she did a better job here. you see how after a few drinks you feel better," thought one X user.
"That actually almost looked like an attempt at break dancing, unlike what she did at the Olymics," opined one.
Although many noted Gunn's moves at the Olympic Village were far better than her Friday attempt, they were still not competition-worthy. Some also compared her movements with a person's attempt at dancing after having too many drinks.
"this was way better than her olympics performance but still," wrote one.
"The fact they are excited and not embarrassed lol," another person said about the bystanders in Marina's video.
"The vibes and moves of an aunt that had one too many glasses of wine," joked one X user.
Raygun doubles down on her positivity post-viral Olympics performance
Despite the immense discouragement and mockery received online, Raygun continued to channel a positive attitude about her performance at the Olympics. In a photo posted on Saturday, Rachel Gunn shared two photos supposedly taken before the competition. As she is seen standing proud in her athletic jungle green and yellow tracksuit, the breaker motivational affirmed:
"Don't be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never know where that’s gonna take you."
Everything that Gunn represented in Friday’s event, including her outfit and technique, stood out from the rest of the competitors. Referring to how she acquired the dance, Raygun said all her “moves are original”. She highlighted the importance of creativity in her life, adding she endeavors to represent art, which may or may not appeal to the judges.
While addressing Japan's Ami Yuasa, Lithuania’s Dominika Banevič, and China’s Liu Qingyi — the gold, silver, and bronze holders of the breakdancing competition at the Olympics respectively, Raygun said she knew she could not compete against their skills. Describing their approach as "dynamic" and "power", Gunn continued:
"I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get that in a lifetime to do that on an international stage."
Regardless of the online ridicule and dissuasion, Rachel Gunn did gain quite a few admirers who appreciated her confidence and positivity. If nothing, she managed to pique everyone's curiosity after Friday.
