A part of a busy Bangkok road completely gave way to a huge sinkhole in the morning hours of September 24, 2025, disrupting traffic and utilities and resulting in the evacuation of the surrounding vicinity. A video capturing the collapse on Samsen Road was widely circulated on social media, showing how the street gave way and dragged down electric poles with it.In the video, a section of the road was seen collapsing and creating a huge sinkhole as cars near the growing hole slowly backed away. As one edge of the road collapsed, a vehicle, presumed to be a Toyota truck, remained unmoving even as its tires touched the edge of the hole. The road on the truck's other side also collapsed, exposing the foundation of the adjacent police station. Meanwhile, a giant water pipe was seen flooding into the sinkhole, and sparks flew as electric poles and wires fell into the hole. The clip of the Bangkok sinkhole went viral on X, and users were seemingly amazed that the truck did not move, with one user writing:"The Toyota remained unfazed."Xen (evm/acc) @zen_ethLINK@BNODesk The toyota remained unfazedSeveral netizens echoed similar thoughts, wondering what happened to the truck's passengers. It is unclear if anybody was inside the truck during the incident, and the clip does not show anybody leaving either.Dan @AzSignMan99LINK@BNODesk OUR LORD AND SAVIOR BLESSED THAT TRUCK 😂Shri Ganesh @QuickrOlxLINK@BNODesk Am I the only one waiting to know what happened to the truck and anyone inside it?Meanwhile, some seemed surprised at the lack of panic from passers-by seen in the video.Andrew @atllamLINK@BNODesk the lack of survival instinct in any of the people in this video...Muthoni's daughter @Miss_Muthoni_LINK@BNODesk Why are people just casual about it, no running, no cars speeding off 😭Still In Town 🇺🇦 🇨🇦 @newintown208LINK@BNODesk @darafaye I would still be running 12 blocks later, not taking a second to look back. 😬Several netizens also theorized on what caused the road to collapse.Peter in PRG🌍 @peterinprgLINK@BNODesk For people unfamiliar with Bangkok it's basically Venice, built on swampland and sinking, very unstable, so I'm more surprised this is not happening way way more often. Which is also reason why you won't see many skyscrapers in BKK.SecondToNone @ChronoverseTickLINK@BNODesk For people wondering the reason behind the road collapse, it is often due to a process called subsidence, where the ground beneath the road sinks. This can be caused by various factors, including unstable soil conditions, such as expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, or loose sand that cannot support the road's weight. Water is a major contributor, as underground pipe leaks or heavy rainfall can wash away the supporting soil, creating voids that eventually collapse. Changes in the groundwater level can also cause the soil to compact and sink, while underground voids from natural sinkholes or man-made construction can lead to a sudden collapse.Rox @NevondoRiLINK@BNODesk Technically it’s not a sinkhole if you intentionally dug a tunnel under the road and put pipe lines 😂😂🤷🏽‍♂️. Surely the road will collapse at some stageBangkok's governor reported zero casualtiesIn a press statement, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced that the sinkhole did not cause any casualties, but three vehicles were damaged in the collapse. Furthermore, he added that the collapse was due to an underground tunnel caving in, which was made worse when the water pipes burst and flooded the hole."We're monitoring the damage and rushing to backfill the gap. The situation has somewhat stabilised, though sliding may continue slightly," he added. The collapsed road, adjacent to a police station and the Vajira Hospital, was reportedly the construction site of a new MRT train line. According to Nation Thailand, the 50-meter-deep sinkhole, which extended about 900 square meters, occurred at the connection point between the new station and the underground tunnel. The sinkhole disrupted traffic in the vicinity. The hospital stated that it was closing outpatient service for the next two days, adding that the service would "resume as soon as possible."Emergency crews launch efforts to secure the site after a massive sinkhole opens in Bangkok, Thailand (Image via Getty)Meanwhile, occupants of the police station and surrounding buildings were ordered to evacuate. Power and water supply were also cut as officials assessed the situation. The governor stated that the city planned to expedite work to repair the damage, fearing that Bangkok's current monsoon rains might worsen the situation. In a statement to AFP, Suriyachai Rawiwan, director of Bangkok's disaster prevention department, said the sinkhole was due to heavy rains and leaky pipes. He added that the water brought soil to the under-construction subway station, built by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority."There was a leak in the water pipe -- water from the pipe eroded (earth) under the road so this incident happened. The water that eroded brought some soil that dropped down to an under-construction subway station, causing the collapse," Suriyachai added.Meanwhile, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will reportedly look into the road collapse and subsequent sinkhole in Bangkok, with Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul adding, "This is a purely engineering matter. We will definitely find the cause," during a press conference.
