Account holders at Bank of America across the US reported an issue where they faced problems with logging into their accounts for several hours on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. Some customers also reported seeing their bank balance at $0 while others claimed their online transactions were invalid. Meanwhile, many were worried about their money disappearing without a trace.
As soon as news of the unexpected situation made its way to social media, netizens began sharing memes about it. Several social media users, including users and non-users of the bank, took to X to make jokes about the outage.
Some of the bank's customers also made light jokes about the situation despite experiencing the outage. A few wrote that even though their debit account balance was showing zero balances, their credit card bills reflected no change.
"The Bank of America outage is real. Just logged into all my accounts with them. Showing zero balances. LOL. FLAT BROKE", tweeted one customer.
"Someone robbed Bank of America, and Bank of America is entering balances to reflect pre-robbery balances. Prove me wrong", wrote one X user.
"Bank Of America terrifying people right now. Even when the balance is Low if it suddenly is 0 I be like my 1.00 fountain soda!!!!!!!!!!! Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!", joked another.
"Bank of America saying I got $0 but my credit card is still showing a balance...Naw mfs put that b*tch at $0 too", said one customer.
Thousands of customers face glitches on Bank of America mobile app and browser
Several account holders tagged the bank on X while they reported that they were unable to view their balances through the mobile application. Other customers claimed that their latest transactions weren't reflected on their current balance visible on the app. The mobile app and the official bank website accessed on browsers were both down for multiple customers.
Downdetector evaluated that the account outage reports peaked at around 1 pm ET and reached nearly 20266 complaints. A user claimed that the app wasn't working and all they could see was the previous day's balance. Meanwhile, another complained that the "transfer between accounts function" wasn't working for any of their accounts. Some users claimed that they were facing issues with transactions through bank cards as well.
While Bank of America did not provide a reason for the outage, they did respond to a social media user's X post about the outage.
"Our social care team is here to assist with any account related questions/concerns you may have," the bank responded.
They attached a direct message link with the tweet so that users could directly speak to the bank customer support agents. The issue is yet to be fully resolved at the time of writing this article.
Customers at the bank went through a similar technical glitch in January 2023 with their accounts suddenly showing a $0 balance after they made transactions via Zelle.
