US State Senator Jeff Wilson was arrested in Hong Kong on Saturday, October 21, 2023, for carrying an unregistered gun in a semi-autonomous Chinese city. According to his website, Jeff was granted bail in the case on Monday, October 23, 2023.
Jeff Wilson is a Republican from Longview who was elected to the Senate in 2020 and has been working on environmental and sanitation issues, as per his website.
The Republican Senator spoke about the arrest and said that he was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm. The court hearing for this case is set to take place on October 30, 2023. His office also said in the statement posted on his website it was "an honest mistake" and that Wilson expected the situation to be resolved soon.
Jeff said that it was an honest mistake as he didn't realize that there was a pistol in his briefcase. He added that he only found that out during his mid-flight. Soon after that, he reported the issue to the customs officials.
It is worth noting that Wilson was heading to Hong Kong with his wife for a five-week vacation to Southeast Asia.
