Following Charlie Kirk's assassination at Utah Valley University, fans and followers of the late political activist reportedly likened his demise to multiple personalities, one of which was Martin Luther King Jr. For the unversed, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot while standing on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

While Kirk's fans have compared Turning Point USA's founder's assassination to that of MLK Jr, the late civil rights activist's eldest son, Martin Luther King III, expressed discontent over the comparison.

According to WAVY TV 10's video dated September 18, 2025, Martin Luther King III explained that his issue with Kirk's comparison to his late father pertained to the angle of inclusivity. Commenting on Charlie Kirk's influence being likened to that of his father, Martin Luther King III said:

"When you’re doing that, it’s a disservice to unification. And it doesn’t mean you have to accept everything and agree with everything my dad said... He certainly was a force in this society and a significant force, but I just disagree with the position that his force was about inclusiveness."

He continued:

"When you denigrate Black women and say that somebody is in a position just because of the color of their skin, that’s gravely false. Every person that he talked about was beyond and eminently qualified.”

What did Charlie Kirk say about Martin Luther King Jr? Details explored amid the late political activist's comparison to the civil rights activist

According to WIRED's report dated January 2024, Charlie Kirk allegedly made a negative comment about Martin Luther King Jr. in December 2023 while speaking at the American Fest. The political activist said:

"MLK was awful. He's not a good person. He said one good thing he actually didn't believe."

At the time, Kirk reportedly said that he had a "very, very radical view" on the Civil Rights Act, which was passed in the 1960s. Dubbing the act a "huge mistake", Charlie Kirk allegedly emphasized that the bill "created a beast” focused on equality of outcomes rather than equality of opportunity, leading to "more crime.”

In his argument, Kirk was referring to the federal law banning discrimination in public places, which led to making employment discrimination illegal. Shortly after WIRED's article was published, Kirk purportedly read out an email from the publication on his The Charlie Kirk Show, where he admitted to describing Martin Luther King Jr. as a "bad guy."

In other news, Kirk's attacker, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested on September 12, 2025, and charged with aggravated murder. Moreover, Kirk's widow, Erika, has affirmed that her husband's Turning Point USA will continue hosting campus events. She also referred to her late husband as a "martyr" in one of her addresses.
