The news of Ray Stevenson's sudden death has cast a looming shadow on Hollywood today. His reps at Independent Talent confirmed that Stevenson passed away on Sunday, May 22, in Italy. The veteran actor, who was 58 years old at the time of his death, recently became a topic of much conversation for playing the primary antagonist in S.S. Rajmouli's Indian epic film RRR, which bagged an Oscar nomination, and subsequently, an award in the Best Song category.

In death, Stevenson leaves behind a rich legacy, full of complex roles and memorable characters, for which fans will remember him for a long time to come. The actor was also part of huge franchises like Marvel and Star Wars.

1) Thor

It's a well-known fact that once you are a part of the massive MCU, you are going to be remembered for a long time. As part of the MCU, Stevenson took up the role of Volstagg, an Asgardian member of the Warriors Three, and went on to reprise his role in the next three films, including the acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok.

Thor was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred Cris Hemsworth in the lead role as the titular character. It was one of the several standalone superhero films that laid the foundation for the acclaimed Avengers and its future sequels.


2) Rome

Another one of Stevenson's most memorable entries, Rome came out in 2005 and cemented the actor's popularity, which he continues to enjoy till date. The historical TV series starred Stevenson as Titos Pullos, one of the roles he is most remembered for. English actor James Purefoy referenced this role in his tweet while commenting about Stevenson's passing, noting:

"So sad to hear the news that Ray Stevenson, our Pullo in Rome, has passed away. A brilliant, gutsy, larger-than-life actor who filled every part he played right up to the brim. My thoughts are with his family, his lovely wife Betta and their beautiful kids. What a loss."

The series had 22 episodes and ran for two seasons.


3) RRR

The film that became a sensation in India and other Asian countries, RRR saw Stevenson take up the role of the big bad evil governor as he fought Indian revolutionaries in a bid to suppress the revolts.

Following the resounding success of RRR, the actor saw a resurgence in his popularity and cemented his place in a completely new fandom in India.


4) Punisher: War Zone

In one of Ray Stevenson's most memorable roles, the veteran actor took up the role of the lead character in the Marvel adaptation, Punisher: War Zone, which saw him don the robes of the Punisher as he fought an army of villains after upsetting a mob.

While this was not among Marvel's most ambitious efforts, it continues to have a cult fan base.
