The two had met each other at a cafe in SoHo, Manhattan, a decade before the film was even made.

During her appearance on the famous "Call Her Daddy" podcast in February 2022, Fox revealed that she was writer and director Josh Safdie's muse for the character Julia De Fores. In 2020, during her conversation with the Guardian, Fox mentioned that she was almost "wary" when she got the script as she felt the character of Julia De Fores was very similar to her actual self.

Fox said, "There were a lot of similarities. Even in the character description, I was kind of like: 'This is a little familiar.' It was pretty spot-on."

Fox also added that she resonated with the character quite a lot as she could relate to it. She described the things she found similar to the character and said, "being independent, resilient, being a hustler, having a ride-or-die mentality, and overall just being really cute," are the pieces of herself that she saw in her Uncut Gems character.

Josh Safdie, who was the writer and director of the 2019 released film with his brother Benny, claims that the resemblance between Fox and the character was "coincidentally initially". However, he also added that as he knew Fox before casting her, it felt as if she was "stuck in their brains" while writing the character.

While talking about the character and its inspiration, Safdie said to The New York Times, "When she finished [reading the script], Julia asked me if I had been spying on her because she thought that there were so many strange similarities with the character."

Safdie also added, "But she gave me good feedback, so I would call her on a whim when I had writer's block, and I would ask her for advice. The character was just kind of constantly evolving to become more specific to her."
