HBO's post-apocalyptic drama series, The Last of Us, was released on 15 January 2023.
The Last of Us, created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, is based on Naughty Dog's 2013 video game of the same name. The series is set twenty years after a massive fungal infection triggered a worldwide pandemic. The series premiered on HBO Max and reached 4.7 million viewers on day one. It is HBO's second largest opening since 2010, with more than 10 million in two days.
What is The Last Of Us about?
The Last of Us is an action tragedy/post-apocalyptic horror. It takes place 20 years after a species of fungus cordyceps infects mankind, transforming those who inhale its toxic spores into animals, such as infected zombies.
The first game makes it possible for the player to control Joel. Joel is a thug who lives in a quarantine zone in Boston, Massachusetts. This is one of the few places where civilization still lives under martial law and is extremely monitored. Joel and his partner Tess steal, sell contraband, and bully every day to maintain a level of comfort in the darkest moments. They're being set up to bring a kid named Ellie out of the quarantine zone. Although the show looks very similar in tone and plot as the game, the creator Neil Druckmann was clear that some parts of the series can and will be different.
Who are in the cast of The Last Of Us?
Pedro Pascal plays Joel, a former highway robber, an old father, a brother, and a tough guy in and around Boston's quarantine zone. Bella Ramsey plays Ellie, a 14-year-old girl who has known nothing but life under martial law in the quarantine zone. Ramsey is known for her breakthrough role as young noblewoman Lyanna Mormont from Game of Thrones.
Anna Torv plays Tess, Joel's partner in crime. She and Joel reluctantly accept Ellie's contraband work from Boston, sort of as a favor to Marlene, played by Merle Dandridge. Other characters are Gabriel Luna who plays Joel’s younger brother Tommy, Nico Parker who plays Joel’s biological daughter, Sarah, and Jeffrey Pierce, who gave voice to Joel’s brother Tommy in the games and has now joined the cast as a new original character.
