Mike Portnoy, one of the primary members of the progressive metal band Dream Theater, has finally returned to the band after initially leaving it over a decade back. Portnoy was one of the founding members of Dream Theater when it started back in 1985. At the time of his departure from the band, it was speculated that there was a rising tension in the ranks.

Mike Portnoy ultimately departed in 2010 and was replaced by Mike Mangini, following an exceptionally rigorous interview procedure, which still lives fresh in the memories of metalheads around the world.

Portnoy last worked with Dream Theater 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Since then, Mangini, who has announced his departure following the band's decision to bring back Portnoy, has worked with the band extensively.

Following his exit, Portnoy went on to create several projects, including Adrenaline Mob with singer Russell Allen and guitarist Mike Orlando and Flying Colors featuring Steve Morse, Neal Morse, Dave LaRue, and Casey McPherson. He also took part in several other bands and projects throughout the last 13 years.

"I know that his return will bring a renewed spirit"- John Petrucci on Mike Portnoy's return to Dream Theater

The entire world is excited about the return of Mike Portnoy, arguably one of the greatest drummers of all time, to the band that he started. The band came out with an elaborate announcement about Portnoy's return, commenting many things about both their original drummer and former drummer Mangini.

Speaking about Portnoy's return, legendary guitarist John Petrucci said,

"I'm incredibly excited to welcome Mike Portnoy back into Dream Theater! As an original founding member, longtime friend and incredibly talented and creative drummer, I know that his return will bring a renewed spirit, passion and energy into DT that all of us, including our fans, will joyfully welcome. I can't wait to roll up our sleeves and get back into the studio together!"

He also added about Mangini,

"Mike Mangini's drumming is otherworldly and I'm extremely grateful for the time he spent with us in Dream Theater. I'm very proud of all the amazing music we made together that culminated in our first GRAMMY win last year and the countless magical moments that we've shared on stage over the past 13 years."

Mangini himself was also accepting of the band's decision and is departing with doors still open. He said in a statement,

"I understand Dream Theater's decision to get Mike Portnoy back at this time. As was said from Day 1, my place was not to fill all the roles that Mike held in the band. I was to play the drums in order to help the band carry on....I really love the band, crew and management and wish them and the entire organization all the best."

With Portnoy's return to the scene, the band will once again feature John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and Portnoy together, all of whom were involved in the creation of the band. The full lineup will also include keyboardist Jordan Rudess and vocalist James LaBrie.

This is arguably one of the most exciting times for Dream Theater fans. Portnoy will be a part of the upcoming album from the band.
