Since the elevator was first mentioned, it has been broken in the building where Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny's apartment is located. Its breakdown and repair were the subjects of debate among viewers.

Many fans made predictions about the series finale of The Big Bang Theory as it got closer to its final episodes. Before the show said goodbye to its audience, everyone had a wish list, and the elevator repair was one of the most requested items. The Big Bang Theory's series finale's first half revealed that the elevator had finally begun to function, proving that the show's creators had not let viewers down.

As Sheldon and Amy's tension over their Nobel Prize win grew, Leonard pulled his best friend into the hallway for a private discussion. Suddenly, Penny stepped out of the operating elevator and said, "Can you believe it? They fixed the elevator." As a result, Sheldon amusingly attempted to flee the Hofstadters by leaving the building via the stairs, only to find Penny waiting for him in the lobby as the elevator was working.

Why was the elevator non-functional?

Although The Big Bang Theory did not go into detail about how the elevator was fixed, viewers should be aware of how it had become broken in the first place. The elevator had not been working for years prior to the start of the show in 2007. Fans discovered this in the season 3 episode "The Staircase Implementation," which occurred four years before the events of the premiere, that it was already obsolete in 2003. In that episode, it was revealed how the elevator had broken down and that the boys were entirely to blame.

Leonard responded to Sheldon's post about needing a new roommate after his previous one, Sebastian (Steven Yeun), left because of his intolerable eccentricities. Not realizing how annoying the brilliant but socially awkward Sheldon was, Leonard eventually gave in to his demands and signed the infamous roommate agreement, despite the warning signs.

Leonard brought his friends, Howard and Raj, back home where they attempted to try a few things after learning that Leonard had a rocket that runs on the fuel he was working on. Sadly, they didn't adjust their calculations for the size of the rocket, and it began to smoke. As the boys began to panic, Sheldon knew exactly how long they had before it exploded. Leonard wished to take it outside via elevator, but time ran out and Sheldon left the rocket in the elevator after forcing his future best friends out and shutting the doors. It was the right decision because the fuel exploded seconds later, effectively stopping the elevator for the majority of The Big Bang Theory's run. This explains why Sheldon didn't insist that the building manager fix it, as he contributed to its malfunctioning.

What else happened in the series finale?

The main supporting plotline focused on Amy and Sheldon's Nobel Prize, which they received for discovering super asymmetry in string theory. Since winning the Nobel Prize is the highest honor a scientist can receive, Amy and Sheldon, as well as their friends, were incredibly happy about it.

Penny finally became pregnant despite her adamant opposition to having children. Although Penny's response was not addressed in the episode, another subplot was resolved, and it was a good thing that she agreed to have children with Leonard.

Raj, the only member of the group without a wife or girlfriend, finally found one on his flight when he met Sarah Mitchell Geller, who was spotted with him during Sheldon's speech at the ceremony. Sarah and Raj would have made a wonderful couple if the series had been given more episodes.

The majority of viewers wanted the elevator fixed, but it was just one of the few unfinished businesses that needed to be wrapped up by the conclusion. The two main issues were the Nobel Prize and the coordination between other leads. like Penny's pregnancy and the Wolowitz children, who were left at home with Stuart so that Bernadette and Howard could attend the ceremony.

Why was the elevator so important?

The elevator was frequently mentioned in the series, either for the sheer fun of having characters run up and down it repeatedly or for creating situations in which the elevator played a role, such as going to the ground floor having certain importance.

Thus, the elevator had no such "importance," but its constant mention and inability to use it made fans wonder how it even broke, and when it was finally fixed in the series finale, many fans were relieved.
