After the series wrapped up with season 6, it was revealed that this would be the last season for the franchise. The decision was made by director Steven Knight, claiming that he would prefer making a movie for the series rather than going with the seventh season.

In an interview with the new platform Variety, that due to unfortunate events of COVID-19, they lost a year of production, resulting in them making a decision to change their medium. He said, “So we put our heads together and thought that it would be a good idea to do a movie instead of doing series seven.” The movie will be the sequel to the sixth season and would be considered the finale for Thomas Shelby's story.
