Only in Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 3 titled ‘The Queens Justice’, does Jamie Lannister learn that Lady Olenna was the one who had poisoned the wine that killed Joffrey. Until then, it was regarded that Tyrion Lannister was the one who killed the child King. She had an arrangement with Littlefinger to end Joffrey's life and use Sansa Stark as bait in the process.
Littlefinger teamed with Dontos Hollard to deliver a necklace given to Tyrion's wife by Olenna which was hidden in a stone attached with poison in it. During the wedding feast, Olenna sneakily took the poisoned stone from Sansa's necklace and put it in Joffrey's wine glass while he was mocking Tyrion, his uncle, using his sword to cut open a cake, and just being the self-centered man he is. Eventually, the instated king drank the wine which was poisoned and had the most gruesome death in the show.
When do we get to know the person who killed Joffrey?
Jamie Lannister and his troops go to Highgarden to cease the Tyrell family, and in her last moment, Olenna reveals the real person who killed his and Cersei's eldest son, and she exposes the truth like a true queen. The head of the House Tyrell had shaken hands with Daenerys Targaryen to take down the Lannisters since Cersei murdered all her family at the end of season 6. She gives Jaime the truth of his son's death, in the last moment after drinking up the fatal poison meant to cause her death.
Olenna’s exact words are "I'd hate to die like your son. Clawing at my neck, foam, and bile spilling from my mouth, eyes blood red, skin purple. It must have been horrible for you, as a Kingsguard, as a father. It was horrible enough for me, a shocking scene, not at all what I intended. You see, I'd never seen the poison work before. Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me."
What happened at the purple wedding?
Cersei Lannister, mother of the king, believed that Tyrion was the one who killed Joffrey in Season 4. The episode is titled The Lion and the Rose, but famously known as the Purple Wedding. Joffrey’s man-child kingship came to an end at the event of the marriage ceremony between Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell, who is Olenna's granddaughter. Tyrion was accused of his nephew's murder because he was the one who had accidentally delivered the wine that killed Joffrey. Dying on his mother's lap, he points his finger toward his uncle while bleeding to death.
Why did Olenna kill Joffrey?
