Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-Jae, won the “Squid Game” in the end.

In the finale, the circumstances were such that Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon), and Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) were the only three survivors from the five terrifying life-or-death rounds. Gi-hun now cares about Sae-byeok and has developed a greater sense of empathy. Sang-woo, however, is not on the same page.

After their celebratory dinner, where they wear tuxedos and eat steak, a steak knife is left for each of the three. Sang-woo could go to any lengths to succeed, even if it means betraying those who are closest to him. When the lights in the dorms go out, he stabs Sae-byeok, who is already hurt from playing glass bridge, and she dies.

The eponymous final game now pits the childhood friends against one another: Squid Game is a variation on the game of chicken in which players attempt to cross into their rivals' home base using a diagram that resembles a squid. Gi-hun, furious at the turn of events, moves in, but even after taking the initiative and gaining the upper hand, he is unable to easily kill his friend. Instead, he decides to forfeit, foregoing the reward so long as he and Sang-woo are free to leave.

In order to kill himself and perform the deed for Gi-hun, Sang-woo, who has come this far by sacrificing his humanity and morality to win, stabs himself in the neck. His final request is for Gi-hun to care for his mother, and despite his unwillingness, Gi-hun ends up winning the games, even though his victory is hollow.

How does the Squid Game end?

In the finale episode, the Front Man, who is in charge of the games, tells Gi-hun that they are a form of entertainment, just like the horses that Gi-hun used to wager on during the ride back to reality. The front man is Detective Hwang's (Wi Ha-joon) missing brother, who was the 28th game winner, as we previously learned. In order to inform the authorities of this murderous scheme, Hwang, who had snuck into the games to find his brother, flees to a nearby island.

When the Front Man and his brother square off, the Front Man reveals his true identity, but out of loyalty to the game, shoots Hwang. The detective is startled, stumbles backward, and falls off a cliff, but it is unknown if he survives or not.

Gi-hun (O Yeong-su) returns home after winning the game to discover his mother has passed away. A year later, he receives a business card bearing the Squid Game logo and bearing the address "gganbu," which is slang for a long-time neighbor. Oh Il-nam (Gi-hun's former game friend), who turns out to be one of the creators behind the games, is lying in a hospital bed on the seventh floor of his address.

The only thing that is real, though, is the brain tumor he mentions to Gi-hun while the games are happening. After giving a speech about why he chose to become a "participant"—to experience life before dying—he passes away, leaving Gi-hun to deal with yet another horrifying realization.

Gi-hun locates the mother of Sae-byeok and Sang-woo and gives her half of his winnings. His daughter, his ex-wife, and her new husband immigrated to America while the games were going on. Due to his debts, his relationship with his daughter was at best strained; however, with his newfound wealth, perhaps things will improve.

Gi-hun sees the salesman (Gong Yoo), who had previously hired him, playing a game with a fresh lead. He rushes over to stop it because he is aware of what awaits this man in the future. The prospect receives the salesman's business card, which Gi-hun yanks away and screams at to never call before the salesman calmly exits and waves goodbye from a departing train.

Gi-hun arrives at the airport while concentrating on the game-changing card in his possession. He makes a call right before getting on the plane and hears a voice asking for his name and birthdate once more. He is instructed to board his flight by the Front Man, who intercepts the call. Gi-hun refuses to board the plane because he has had enough of listening to the Front Man, and the show ends.

Squid Game, a Netflix survival drama, broke streaming records, garnered numerous honors, and propelled its cast to international fame. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show's writer and director, states in a letter to the audience, "It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. In the dystopian K-drama, residents wager away their lives in an effort to win a fortune. Players are fatally eliminated one at a time in a series of horrifying and brutal childhood games, with only one person remaining. "We are working on the script right now and making the form of the story," Kim Ji-yeon, the executive producer, tells Tudum. "But there’s definitely a lot of pressure on how to make Season 2 even better.” “I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much, but really, we’re focusing on how to make it even more joyful for the global audience."
