10 things you need to know about Alexandr Dolgopolov

Alexandr Dolgopolov shook the tennis world today by defeating World No. 1 and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the Indian Wells third round. Here's all you need to know about the man from Ukraine, who has joined a select group of players to have defeated the matador from Mallorca.

#1 Changed his name in 2010

He was formerly known as Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. But in May 2010, he changed the spelling of his first name to the current form.

#2 Parents were both sportspersons

Alexandr's father, Oleksandr Dolgopolov, was a professional tennis player for the Soviet team, and his mother was a gymnast. He started playing tennis at age 3, coached by his father.

#3 Practised with the legends

At a young age, Dolgopolov lived on the tour with his parents, traveling frequently and practising with players such as Andre Agassi and Boris Becker. Players such as Jim Courier remember hitting balls with Dolgopolov when he was a toddler.

#4 Suffers from Gilbert\'s Syndrome

Dolgopolov suffers from a hereditary disorder known as Gilbert's Syndrome, which affects his liver, blood and often causes fatigue. His condition worsens when he has to cross continents through extensive travel, and requires intravenous drug treatments and monitored diets to get himself back on track.

#5 First singles title in 2012

Dolgopolov won his only ATP World Tour singles title to date at the Citi Open in August 2012 at Washington, DC.

#6 Australian Open 2011 QF run

Dolgopolov reached the quartefinals of the Australian Open in 2011, which is his best result in a Grand Slam till date.

#7 Doubles title with Malisse

Dolgopolov's only doubles title till date came at Indian Wells in 2011 alongside Xavier Malisse.

#8 First Ukranian to beat World No. 1

By defeating Rafael nadal at Indian Wells, Dolgopolov became the first Ukranian tennis player to defeat a reigning World No. 1.

#9 Unorthodox playing style

Dolgopolov has a very unorthodox style and he, along with Bernard Tomic, produced one of the funkiest and most entertaining matches of all time in their second round match at the 2012 Australian Open.
