5 reasons to look forward to the 2015 WTA Season

Monika

For fans and players alike, 2014 has definitely been one heck of a year! The world of tennis saw a lot of new faces making it big and some old faces finding it tough to break through. While some wins were expected, the others were nothing less than a shocker. We were treated to some amazing tennis this year and the players never failed to make our hearts pound with breathtaking shots. Here’s why you should look forward to the next season!

#5 Can Ana Ivanovic stay in the Top 5?

Ana Ivanovic had a resurgent 2014 season. She beat Venus Williams in the Auckland final and got the better of the other sister Serena Williams in the fourth round at the Australian Open. She won titles at Monterrey, Birmingham and Tokyo. The Serb had a wonderful chance to reach the finals of the WTA finals, but couldn’t win her match against Simona Halep in the final.

She returned to World No. 5 this season and hopes to win more Grand Slams in 2015.

#4 The rise of the young stars!

There are a lot of new faces who could take the tennis world by storm next season. The list includes Belinda Bencic, World number 23 Garbine Muguruza, and the world number 27 Madison Keys who achieved breakthrough results in 2014. Bencic made it to the quaterfinal of the U.S Open and reached her first WTA final at Tianjin. Muguruza reached the quaters at Roland Garros and the big shocker came when she defeated Serena in the second round.

There are a lot of chances that one of them (or maybe all ) would break into the top-10 by the end of 2015!

#3 Simona Halep & Caroline Wozniacki - Can they win their first Slam?

Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki made a strong statement on the tour by reaching deep stages of Grand Slams on a regular basis. The top seeds and favorites will be wary of these two ladies before facing them in crucial matches in the second week of a Major.

Will Halep make it big next season to win a Slam? Will Wozniacki come back to being world number 1 again? These questions will be answered next season.

#2 Eugenie Bouchard - Improve on her 2014 performances next year?

This new face in women’s tennis has a lot to promise. Eugenie Bouchard is small little firecracker and she proved that in 2014. This Canadian star had the best ever season in 2014 when she advanced into a Grand Slam final, made an appearance in two Grand Slam semifinals, won a WTA title and made it into the top-5 of the world rankings.

It was an absolutely stunning performance for this 20-year old new-comer and 2015 would be all about taking things even higher from here. Is she consistent enough to continue playing such great tennis? Will she win a Slam next year?

#1 Maria Sharapova Vs Serena - No. 1

It would be really interesting to see Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams battling it out for the top spot again.

Statistically, Maria has just got the better of Serena just two times since 2004 – once was in the final of the 2004 Wimbledon, and the second time was when she won the final of the Tour Championships in LA that same year. Since then, it has been Serena all the way and has a 16-2 head-to-head lead over the Russian beauty.

This rivalry is ready to rise to a whole new level in 2015 and all that it promises for us is some more amazing tennis!
