India continued their impressive run in this year's World Cup as they notched up their 6th straight win of the tournament. With that, India has now won all the matches in their group and have extended their unbeaten run in World Cups to 10. Zimbabwe batted first and put up a total of 287 on the board with Brendan Taylor scoring a century in his farewell match for the African nation. India's chase began in a wobbly fashion as they lost both their openers cheaply. Kohli steadied the ship for a while, but he too got out after making 38. But Captain Dhoni stitched up an unbeaten 196 run partnership with Suresh Raina, as the duo took India to victory with 8 balls to spare. Here are the most important stats that we came across during the course of the match:
#1 Dhoni - 1st person to score 3000 runs between overs 41 to 50
MS Dhoni during the course of his unbeaten knock of 85, became the first batsman to score more than 3000 runs between overs 41 to 50 in the last decade. Before the match, Dhoni had amassed 2961 runs in-between those overs, and now he has increased his tally to 3046.
Retired Australian batsman Michael Hussey is the next name on that list.
#2 Highest successful run chase
India now chased 288 to win the game which is their highest successful run chase in a World Cup match. Their previous best was in the 2011 World Cup final at Mumbai against Sri Lanka where they chased 275 to win their second World title.
MS Dhoni was the architect behind that chase as well as he finished unbeaten on 91 that night.
#3 99 wins as Captain
Indian Captain MS Dhoni is now tied with Hansie Cronje on the third spot for winning the most number of ODI matches as a Captain. With this win against Zimbabwe, India has now won 99 matches under Dhoni’s leadership and they will look to touch the magical three-figure mark when they take on Bangladesh at the MCG on the 19th of March in the quarterfinals.
#4 Most sixes hit in a World Cup
This World Cup is certainly living up to its reputation of being a high scoring one! But despite having bigger grounds in Australia (New Zealand has smaller ones to make up for it) the sixes keep coming.
The knockouts are yet to begin, but we already have witnessed the most number of sixes ever hit in a World tournament. This year’s World Cup has already seen the ball sail over the fence 378 times, which is five more than the previous record which was 373 during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.
#5 Highest World Cup partnership while chasing
Just a few days ago, India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan re-wrote the records with an opening partnership of 174. And now, Dhoni and Raina’s unbeaten 196 run stand has overtaken it to become the highest partnership for India in World Cups while chasing.
It is also India’s sixth highest overall partnership in World Cup history with Ganguly and Dravid still holding on to the top spot when they put on 318 against Sri Lanka at Taunton during the 1999 edition.
#6 400 runs in a World Cup
Brendan Taylor certainly played a blinder in his last match for Zimbabwe. No other batsman from the African nation has ever managed to cross 400 runs in a single edition of the World Cup before. Taylor managed to finish the tournament with 433 runs.
Former all-rounder Neil Johnson held the record previously when he scored 367 runs in England in 1999 when Zimbabwe made it to the Super Six stage.
#7 Most 100\'s by a Zimbabwean
Taylor ensured that he went out with a bang! He scored his 8th one-day hundred today for Zimbabwe and no other batsman from his country has scored that many in this format. He thus ensured that he went past former skipper Alistair Campbell’s tally of seven ODI hundreds.
#8 Back to back World Cup hundreds
The man also ensured that he joined an elite group of players with his blistering 100. Before today, 8 batsmen had made back-to-back hundreds in a World Cup and Taylor has now become the 9th.
The other 8 are Mahmudullah Riyad, Kumar Sangakkara, Mark Waugh, Rahul Dravid, AB de Villiers, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Saeed Anwar.
#9 Ashwin touches 75 with the ball
Ravichandran Ashwin might have bowled excellently so far in this World Cup, but found the going tough against a rampaging Taylor and Sean Williams. For the first time in his ODI career, he conceded 75 runs as he ended up with figures of 1 for 75 in ten overs.
The previous highest was 74 that he conceded against the West Indies around three and half years ago.
#10 Second only to Ponting
With a win over Ireland previously, Dhoni went past Ganguly’s World Cup winning streak of 8 games to take his own tally to 9. And now with this victory, he only has former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting in his sights (which would be very hard to go past) who has led Australia to 24 successive wins.
Dhoni has now won 10 consecutive World Cup matches as a skipper. Before this game, he was tied with West Indian great Clive Lloyd with 9 wins.
