5 ODI teams that have performed far better in home matches than away

The turn of the millennium has changed India’s fortunes in big tournaments dramatically.

Playing conditions surely have a greater significance in cricket than in any other sport. This is precisely the reason why teams tend to perform better in their more familiar home conditions than in alien conditions away from home. While a few teams like Australia and West Indies have managed to strike quite a balance in terms of home and away ODI performances over the years, some of the others have been way better in home conditions. There is a stark difference between the win percentages of these teams in their own backyard and beyond it.Let's take a look at 5 ODI teams who have greater home records:

#5 India

The turn of the millennium has changed India’s fortunes in big tournaments dramatically.

Home Win Percentage - 57.98%

Away Win Percentage - 46.35%

India have had quite a rollercoaster ride as an ODI team ever since the format came into existence. They started off as mere pushovers for a few initial years, yet suddenly they were world champions and performed quite well for a while after that.

Come the 1990s, India were still a force to reckon with in the 50-over formats, but seemed a little out of place in big tournaments and also away from home. The turn of the millennium changed their fortunes yet again as they recorded one impressive performance after another, both at home and away. India are among the top ODI teams in world cricket at present, but need to regain their mojo after some dismal performances of late.

Team India have been extremely strong at home as a win percentage of 57.98% in 307 matches would suggest. However, there is still a lot to do in terms of improving their away record as their victory percentage sinks to 46.35% with 273 wins in 589 ODIs.

#4 South Africa

South Africa have been perhaps the most consistent team to have featured in several World Cups.

Home Win Percentage - 68.64%

Away Win Percentage - 56.88%

Ever since their return to international cricket in 1992, South Africa have been one of the most dominant teams in the world across all formats of the game. They may not have won a single World Cup so far, but have certainly won a lot of matches in the 50-over format.

The Proteas have reached the semis of cricket's marquee event 4 times out of 7 appearances and their only victory in an ICC event was winning the inaugural ICC Knockout Trophy in the year 1998. South Africa can also be credited for giving the ODI format some of its great performers in recent years.

Although the South Africans have been highly successful in both home and away matches, there is still a marked difference in their win percentages. They have played 220 ODIs at home and won 151 of them giving them a victory percentage of 68.64%. This figure drops to 56.88% in away ODIs with 186 wins in 327 matches, which is still impressive.

#3 Bangladesh

With consecutive series wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa, Bangladesh have shed off their ‘minnows’ tag.

Home Win Percentage - 40.13%

Away Win Percentage - 23.13%

Bangladesh's emergence as an force to reckon with in the 50-over format of late has been quite remarkable. They were known to be minnows in international cricket until a few years back with the ability to upset big teams in important games.

However, they have managed to hit a bit of a purple patch since their impressive showing in the 2015 ICC World Cup. With back-to-back home series wins over Pakistan, India and South Africa, Bangladesh have shown the cricketing world what they are capable of.

But if the Bangladeshis really want to prove their mettle as a cricketing powerhouse, they need to work on their away performances. Their away win percentage is as low as 23.13% with 37 victories in 160 ODIs, whereas at home, it increases to 40.13% as Bangladesh have won 61 out of 152 games.

#2 New Zealand

New Zealand’s performance in the 2015 World Cup has been at par with excellence.

Home Win Percentage - 54.91%

Away Win Percentage - 36.88%

New Zealand have blown hot and cold ever since they became one of the prominent teams to be playing cricket. Compared to Test cricket, the Kiwis are known to be a much more dangerous side in ODI cricket.

A testimony to this fact has been their performance at the World Cups as they have qualified for 6 semi-finals and were the runners-up in the 2015 edition. Apart from that, they have also won the ICC Knockout Trophy, which was renamed Champions Trophy, in the year 2000.

Despite being such a consistent ODI team, one of the biggest areas of concern for the Kiwis over the years has been their indifferent form in matches played away from home. Their win percentage in these matches is a glaring 36.88%, which is way lower than the impressive win percentage of 54.91% New Zealand have in 275 home ODIs.

#1 Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka rose to cricketing prominence through the 1996 World Cup victory.

Home Win Percentage - 61.21%

Away Win Percentage - 41.28%

Sri Lanka started off their journey as minnows in the cricketing world and took quite a while to settle down. However, their unprecedented World Cup win in 1996 established them as a powerhouse in the game.

Since then, the team from the Emerald Isle have been pretty consistent in their performances, particularly due to the emergence of some great heroes from time to time. However, if there is one thing that they would want to improve on, it is surely going to be their form in matches away from home.

In 232 ODIs Sri Lanka have played in home conditions, they have registered as many as 142 wins giving them a victory percentage of 61.21%. Away from home though, this figure falls down drastically to 41.28% with the island nation managing to win just 220 out of 533 ODIs.
