10 Issues that WWE 2K15 last-gen needs to address

Since the time of its announcement months ago, gamers have been excited about the next-gen WWE game release. Given how good 2K14 was, it’s no wonder fans of the series were looking forward to the 2K15 launch which seemed promising and boasted of having the world’s most realistic representation of professional wrestling with a career mode to boot. And with the official gameplay trailers and screenshots being released of the next-gen version of the game, it did in fact seem to live up to its promise. The last-gen version of the game was released a month prior to the next-gen and sadly it doesn’t meet its expectations. Again we know that a last-gen game will not be able to live up to the hype of its modern counterpart but what 2K15 last-gen is, is basically an overhaul of the previous game 2K14 with nothing new to offer. So with that, here are ten issues that WWE 2K15 needs to address.

#10 No unique match types

Despite being a good game as far as WWE game releases go, 2K14 still lacked entertaining match types. Other than the typical ones such as Royal Rumble, Inferno and Elimination chamber, there wasn’t much else 2K14 had to offer.

You’d think developers would try to make things more entertaining by adding unique match types to the 2K15 version to make it more entertaining for players, but that isn’t the case. So no Punjabi Prison or Hair vs Hair or any other entertaining match types. Just the same old ones found in the previous game.

#9 Some great rivalries have not been included

Who can forget all the memorable rivalries that have sprung up over the past years on WWE?, well..2K15, that’s who. 30 years of Wrestlemania kept this in mind and allowed players to relive some historical moments on WWE that way. But that isnt the case with 2K15 which instead has tried to build a mode around some of the rivalries in WWE but has left out the historical ones.

Other then Shawn Michaels VS Triple H, 2k seems to have left out some of the greatest rivalries that every true WWE fan would have loved to see in the game like Kane VS the Undertaker or The Rock VS Stone Cold. Those feuds were some of the best in WWE history. And it seems the DLC won’t have much to offer in that regards either with a focus on Randy Orton VS Christian . The only saving grace here is that Ultimate Warrior will have a homage to Ultimate Warrior with the Showcase mode delving through his career.

#8 Character renders are less than impressive

The good news? Sting is now a playable character in the WWE game. The bad news? His character render looks horrid to say the least. So Sting fans who pre-ordered the game are not going to be rejoicing.

Character renders are important, especially for a game built around a sport. You want your characters to look as realistic as possible because fans look forward to seeing their favourite players in a game, and when you don’t render your character accordingly you lose that appeal. Considering 2K14 did a good job in this department we were hoping for the same from 2K15. But it sadly doesn’t live up to its expectations.

Want to know how bad it is? Above is a pic of Vince Mcmahon in 2K15. Looking 30 years younger and nothing like the real Mcmahon.

#7 Reversal system is the same as 2K14

Fans were not too happy with the reversal system in 2K14. The concept of reversal timing in the game was aggravating allowing for too many reversals per match making it a huge disadvantage for players against certain opponents.

So for all the praise 2K14 received, the reversal system is the only thing that weighed it down. And annoyingly enough, the reversal system in 2K15 is almost identical to its predecessor. It’s surprising that the issue hasn’t been addressed in 2K15, I mean how hard can it be to tweak the reversal system a little so it’s less frustrating for players.

#6 Frustrating and repetitive game modes

One of the new modes that 2K15 has to offer is the Who Got NXT mode. And while it seems decent enough, some objectives are too tough to achieve. An example of this is an objective match where you have to win a TLC match but the catch is that if your opponent so much as touches the belt, you lose. While some people may feel up for the challenege it may seem a bit too hard and frustrating for the rest.

On the other hand the 2K Showcase mode is fun at first but gets too monotonous after a few matches. There is no challenge or variety here to make it interesting enough after the first six matches. Players might lose interest half way.

#5 Some Modes have been removed or excluded

Unlike the next-gen version which boasts of a career mode called “My career”, the last gen version as no such modes. The career mode allows players to build their characters and take them through the ranks of the industry, starting from the WWE Performance Center, through matches and ends when your character is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sounds pretty awesome. But the last-gen version completely excludes this mode for some reason and replaces it with a Who Got NXT which is just a limited series of matches which focuses on up and coming NXT stars Adrien Neville, Bo Dallas, Rusev, Sami Zayn & Corey Graves. No custom characters. No working your way to the top.

What’s worse is that both Create-A-Story and Create-A-Moveset have been removed from this version and while the creation suite from the previous game is featured, it has huge omissions and loses its appeal. Removing Create-A-Story doesn’t make sense as there are many players who love creating their own stories in WWE, it kept them entertained and was a good concept. So this move is bound to disappoint quite a few players.

#4 Gameplay is stale

After playing 2K15 for a while, you’d notice that the game is no different than its predecessor. Almost everything from the buttons down to the pacing is similar to the old game. It’s perfectly okay to include a few elements from 2K14 since the game worked well but the developers have ignored what the players had to say about 2K14 and made no improvements in certain elements that were not too popular with players.

This wouldn’t have been an issue if 2K15 didn’t have to promise players whole new gameplay elements. It also didn’t mention that these elements were only exclusive to the next-gen version of the game.

#3 Rooster is too small

If you were expecting a larger rooster, you’re out of luck. 2K has a small rooster and has tried to make up for this by including two attires for nearly every wrestler. This isn’t a dress up game. Most players won’t find choosing between outfit 1 or outfit 2 interesting. They could have included a few more characters and this would have delighted players. Maybe the Edge or Bret Hart?.

It’s like the developers wanted to get done creating the old-gen version of the game as soon as possible, resulting in a pretty small, predictable character rooster. Including a few legends would have made the game so much more interesting which brings us to our next point.

#2 The game needs more Legends

2K14 had included a few legends in the game like Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Randy Savage. So fans were expecting an even bigger list of legends in 2K15. But they weren’t impressed. Yes the game has Stone Cold and Hulk Hogan and now even Sting, but they don’t really count, since its already expected that they would be in the game. 2K15 could’ve have really surprised fans by maybe including Ernie Ladd.

Players would have loved seeing their favourite wrestlers growing up and it would have given them the opportunity to recreate historic matches or possibilities in new matches. 2K15 should really consider including in some more legends, it would make the game so much more exciting. Imagine being able to recreate a match between Ernie and Andre the giant!.

#1 Feels too similar to 2K14

As mentioned earlier in the article, 2K15 last-gen is nothing more than a revamped 2K14. If you have the older version then there’s no real point getting 2K15 since you won’t be getting anything unique besides a new outfits and a few additions to the roster.

Also not including the MyCareer mode was a huge let down. The mode could have been amazing and had so much potential but the devs just did not make it as appealing as the career mode and the choice of feuds wasn’t all that great.

The reason for this is probably because a little too much time was devoted to creating the next-gen version of the game instead of this version. There is still a lot of room for improvement and it’s great that they thought of the last-gen audience, but a bit of effort on their part could have made the game so much stronger.
