5 things you didn't know about Robert Lewandowski

After having started his career as a teen at Varsovia, Robert Lewandowski gradually made his way to the Polish top division where he helped his team Lech Poznan win the 2009-10 championship with 18 goals to his name. From then on there was no looking back for the Polish striker as he went on to join German giants Borussia Dortmund. He had a key role to play in leading the club to a Bundesliga and DFB Cup double in the 2011/2012 season. It was evident that he was a proper goal scoring striker as was proved by his four goal haul against Real Madrid in the semifinals of last year's UEFA Champions League. He has now made a move to Bayern Munich.Lets take a look at some interesting facts abouthim.

#1 Family of Sportspersons

His parents always knew that their son could be a good footballer. His father Krystof was a Polish Judo champion and also played for Hutnik Warsaw. Lewandowski got most of his early football skills from his father. His mother Iwona was a professional volleyball player, a career move that his sister Milena made too.

His family were always supportive of his career. Once he had a communion on the same day of his football match but managed to complete it quickly thanks to the local priest and went on to score a goal later that day.

His family kept his name simple as they wanted to avoid tongue-twisters to help fans and media.

#2 Love Life

His private life also garners lots of attention from the media. Lewandowski fell in love with Anna,a Karate world cup bronze medalist. The German media went mad when they relocated to the Ruhr region and called them the “Polish Beckhams”.

It seems that Anna helped him brush up on his aerial abilities as he scored a wonderful bicycle kick in his first friendly for Dortmund.

#3 Heroes from a Comic book

When Lewandowski joined BVB,his fellow countrymen Piszczek and Blaszczykowski took him under their wing and made him feel comfortable and helped him settle down.

Jurgen Klopp affectionately referred to them as Lolek and Bolek (heroes from a Polish comic book).

#4 Man in demand

The Polish striker has a huge fan base. After his side won against Werder Bremen in March 2012, he was to make an appearance on a TV Programme called “Aktuelle Sportstudio”. He was on his way but could never make it there, as a bridge had been torn down.

After futile attempts to reach using a helicopter, he decided to go back home and have the show rescheduled.

He was also selected for the cover photo of the FIFA 10 Poland edition.

#5 Missed opportunity

When Franciszek Smuda, the former coach of Lech Poznan saw the skills of Lewandowski as a teenager, he was not amused and compared him to a tree.

It turned out to be a big mistake as Lewandowski played well for Znicz Pruszkow and eventually moved to Lech later.
