2002 World Cup - Quarter-Final | Brazil 2-1 England

Goal Scorer - Ronaldinho

Samba magic by the magician himself...

It is a pity that this Brazilian legend has not played more at the world cup arena than many would have expected him to, but that did not leave him troubled for long as he made the most from his presence in 2002.

Brazil faced England in the quarter-finals. After an early Michael Owen goal for England, Rivaldo equalized it in the dying minutes of first half to make it 1-1. What followed next was a piece of ambiguous magic from Ronaldinho. Realizing that the English goal keeper was out of his line, he made the most of it by scoring an amazing 40-yard free kick to give Brazil the lead and eventually the win. Howbeit the pre-goal scenario, once the ball dipped under the crossbar into the top corner there was not much anyone can argue about the beauty of that strike.

People have argued for a decade about the intent of the strike being a normal cross. The error in judgment by English goalie David Seaman and Ronaldinho’s celebration clearly suggest the Brazilian had a plan and had taken a calculative risk that worked to perfection. It is one of the greatest world cup goals.

#9 Diego Forlan [2010]

Diego Forlan

The man who tamed the Jabulani

Jabulani was the official match ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup whom everybody criticized for having an unfamiliar flight. The players questioned about its participation in the ongoing tournament but Diego Forlan didnt. He rose to the occasion and scored many decisive goals in the tournament for his country. As each of his goals had enough weight and importance, we select all of his goals in this list that won him the Golden Ball of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Sir, take a bow.

Theres no substitute for old school

Argentina 2-1 Mexico | Round of 16

In the second half of extra-time, this epic match saw a touch of genius from Maxi Rodriguez. Juan Sorin hit a long aerial cross pass to Rodriguez, who jumped and chested the ball to score a left footed volley from the right flank into the opponents goal.

England 2-2 Sweden | Group Stage

While Maxi scored from the volley from right flank with his left foot into the top-left corner of goal, Joe Cole scored a mirror volley from left flank with his right foot into the top-right corner of goal. He too controlled the ball via a little jump off the ground to chest the ball and then the ball left flying to hit the back of the net.

Both these goals are undoubtedly two of the most scintillating glimpses of world cup past and perhaps the two perfect goals scored, ever.

Negrete collected and controlled a high ball just in front of the hole and combined a little one two with Aguirre without letting the ball touch the ground. What followed was an irresistible finish that seemed an art of gravity.

Negrete attempted an insane looking scissor kick but connected well and it resulted in the ball going in the bottom left corner of the goal while whole of the host nation celebrated in delight as they saw their team produce magic.
