Top 10 Stables in Professional Wrestling history

Call it a stable, faction, gang or whatever name that might rise, but a group of wrestlers coming together and giving a name for themselves was always a cool thing in professional wrestling.Over the years, many such groups went through WWE with some making their mark permanently while others failed to live up to the expectations. In the current roster also WWE seems to be employing the same formula of having stables fight it out as we see the likes of Shield, Evolution and Wyatt Family having a firm foothold in the main event scene.Though it will still be premature to say where Wyatt Family and Shield will stand as the years pass by, they will have standards that need to be maintained in order to rank up there. So here is a look at some of the best stables from yesteryears that has left the bar high for teams like Shield and Wyatt family.

#10 The Nation of Domination

The heel force which gave the platform for Rock, the Nation of Dominance thrived on racial grounds. The group was originally headed by Faarooq and had D’Lo Brown, Rock, Mark Henry and Ahmed Johnson as its major members.

Rock eventually turned out to be the star of the faction and kicked out Faarooq to become the unofficial leader. D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry also had a good push as a part of the Nation of Dominance as well.

They were just practically some bullies who believed that only the good looking people could make it in WWE and was willing to take out anyone that crossed their path.

Though they didn’t have many memorable feuds, the fact that it was the reason why Rock rose up the rank is enough to know the value of his stable.

#9 The Nexus

The reason why the Nexus made it into the list while some other teams didn’t was because they were a bunch of nobodies that eventually made a big impact on WWE.

The NXT participants one night came out of nowhere and started taking out the main eventer of WWE and eventually started feuding with John Cena. Wade Barrett was the one who was most benefitted by the angle as he ended up being the mouthpiece of the rebel movement.

It had Barrett, Daren Young, Ryback, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Bray Wyatt, Curtis Axel and Daniel Bryan in their old days and it could be safe to say that a majority of the Nexus members did well in the business.

Nexus could have lasted a bit longer as it was pure fun to see someone take over WWE to get what they deserved.

#8 Ministry of Darkness

Undertaker forming a stable is not something that we are bound to see every day, but when he made one, they did some tormented stuff.

It had Paul Bearer, The Big Boss Man, The Acolytes and Undertaker at the start but later It was revealed that Vince McMahon was the one who pulled the strings for everything they did. And that included the kidnapping of Stephanie McMahon.

The ministry had feuds with Steve Austin, Stephanie and Kane in their 5 month span and gave the fans some memorable moments to cherish.

Taker was a big influence in the style in which the stable was moulded but Vince McMahon’s introduction made it pretty much like an Authority storyline which totally took the life off the angle.

#7 The Evolution

The Evolution had the past, the present and the future in a perfect mix. It just made Orton and Batista the main event draws that they are today.

During their original run, Evolution managed to establish themselves as one of the best heel stables of the time. They even held many titles to show their success. Hunter and Orton won the World Heavyweight title, while Orton also won the intercontinental title.

Batista paired with Flair to win the tag team title and also won the Royal Rumble single handedly. The purpose of Evolution was to put one over the younger guys and the way the group ended serve the objective.

Orton and Batista came out of the group looking good and established. A recent reunion suggests that Evolution could still do something great despite being slower in the ring.

#6 The Hart Foundation

Bret Hart was seen as the ultimate face superstar by the whole community and when he turned heel at WrestleMania 13, WWE had the ammunition to build up a whole faction on that.

Bret recruited Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart, British Bulldog and Brian Pillman to form the Hart Foundation which turned out to be a stable that everyone loved to hate. The Foundation often played up that Canada was always better than the United States which kicked right into the patriotic senses of the fans.

They had feuds with Steve Austin, Legion of Doom and Ken Shamrock in their 8 month life span. The group as a whole had some bad luck after disbanding with the death of Pillman and Owen Hart and the Montreal Screwjob which took Bret out of WWE.

#5 The Corporation

Authority angle at its best, the Corporation was the stable which established Vince McMahon as the bad boss that everyone hates.

Consisting of Shane McMahon, Rock, Ken Shamrock and the Big Boss Man alongside Vince, the stable held multiple titles. Rock was the World champion on many occasions while Shamrock got his hands on the European title and Intercontinental title. It didn’t stop there as Big Boss Man won the hardcore title and also won the Tag team titles with Shamrock.

The Corporation had some memorable battles with Steve Austin and DX during their run. But the problem with the corporation was that they got too big and had to align with DX which marked the start of the McMahon-Helmsley era.

#4 Fabulous Freebirds

It’s not every day that you see a stable being stuck with each other for more than a decade. But back in the '80s, the Fabulous Free birds achieved that feat. They were the hottest stable back in the time and consisted of Michael P.S. Hayes, Buddy Roberts, Terry Gordy, and Jimmy Garvin.

Hayes in particular was so good with the mic that it was impossible not to like him. The Freebirds went across many territories and were part of promotions like WCW, WWF, AWA and the NWA.

They even have a whopping 28 collective titles to their name which was a very big achievement back in those days where the titles rarely changed hands.

#3 NWO

Back during the Monday Night Wars, Eric Bischoff planned out a great storyline which saw a lifelong face Hulk Hogan turn heel and align with the Outsiders, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall to form the NWO.

The NWO just wanted to take over WCW and throw out the power structure. They had constant battles with the rest of the WCW rosters and as years passed, many members were added along with the three original ones.

Eventually, everyone wanted to be part of the faction and it ultimately cost WCW as they lost all the purpose of the actual group. But it was a great thing when it lasted and WCW almost put WWE out of business with this one faction.

Though WWE tried to revive them after acquiring WCW, it didn’t go too well as it ended up being one of the worst blunders they did.

#2 D Generation X

When WCW pulled out NWO from nowhere, WWE had to answer them with something cooler and this lead to the birth of DX, a stable that had all the essence of Attitude Era.

DX was synonymous with fun and all they wanted was to make the fans enjoy. The group had Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Chyna and the New Age Outlaws that did some stuff that we never thought we’d see on national television.

The amount of graphic language they used was so high that the WWE started getting warnings from all around the place. And one segment in particular that will always ring a bell about DX will be the one in which they invaded WCW. The only thing that stopped DX getting inside the building of WCW with their truck was the security.

Controversial moments like this were the highlight of the stable and the whole Attitude they bought to the table made the fans drool over them.

#1 The Four Horsemen

The Four Horsemen were the guys who redefined the way we saw stables in professional wrestling. The original faction consisted of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Ole Anderson and their manager JJ Dillon.

These guys were people that anyone didn’t want to mess with as they backed up whatever trash they talked with their in ring performance.

They pulled off some excellent promos and matches which were out of the time making them more popular with the fans. The stable also had great championship resume as Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard were tag team champions while Ric Flair enjoyed World title success.

The fact that they are the only faction to be inducted into the hall of fame is enough to tell how brilliant these guys were and they certainly set the marks high for any stable that wanted to be successful.
