Why Chelsea will emulate Arsenal's Invincibles this season

Fabregas and Matic have been central to everything Chelsea have done in midfield.

Chelsea have been in fascinating form this season and are showing no signs of decline. The quest for supremacy in modern day football is a treacherous undertaking but with a squad which consists of a plethora of superstars, the job might become a tad easier. For Jose Mourinho, defeating the opponent is never enough. Instead, the Portuguese believes in outwitting his adversary in addition to overthrowing him. Three years since The Blues last won the league, three managerial changes and and an astounding £250.2 million pounds later, it looks like they are on the path of invading the most coveted honour in English football - that of having an undefeated season. The Blues have enjoyed an unblemished start to the season, amassing 29 points out of the available 33 until now. Fierce counter attacks, a defensive line set in stone, friendly crackers from the baby-faced assasin Oscar coupled with the tactical deftness of 'The Special One' has set the tone for the Stamford Bridge outfit this season. It seems like they're loaded with ample amount of ammunition in every department, be it the goalkeeper's spot, the rock solid backline or the fearsome attacking force. However, the tougher challenge which they face is the prospect of invincibility. Looking at Jose Mourinho's side, it looks like nothing could go wrong for them at this moment in time. They're involved in four competitions and have still managed to stay unbeaten largely due to their depth in squad and smart rotation of players. One may argue that the season is long and that in the latter stages crucial players might suffer injuries at important times and some of them would can hit the occasional rough patch too, but such is the quality as well as the quantity at Chelsea's disposal, that all of this will also fail to deter them from their course. Below, I have enlisted three main reasons as to why Chelsea will remain invincible through the course of the Premier League campaign.

#1 Elegant Midfield

Fabregas and Matic have been central to everything Chelsea have done in midfield.

When Jose Mourinho decided to sell Juan Mata to arch rivals Manchester United, he raised quite a few eyebrows. Selling the player who has been your Player Of The Year for two consecutive seasons and whose contributed selflessly for the team was, according to some, 'stupid' and 'disrespectful'. But, like always, Mourinho had an ace up his sleeve.

He signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in the summer transfer window and what an ingenious decision that has been. Mourinho was quick to realise that Mata didn't possess the dynamism which he was trying to incorporate within his team and Fabregas provided that in abundance.

Since his move to London, Fabregas hasn't missed a single opportunity to remind his former employers what a big 'crime' they had commited by letting the Spaniard leave Camp Nou. His selfless approach has returned only one goal for Chelsea but he has compensated for that comprehensively by racking up nine assists so far this season.

Assisting Fabregas in the centre of the park is the tall, strong and determined Serbian Nemanja Matic. Ever since Matic has moved to Chelsea from Benfica, he has gone from strength to strength and his style of play have forced critics to draw comparisons to the way Claude Makelele served the London side during his tenure at the club.

Matic manages to disposses his opponent with impeccable ease and posseses a multitude of passess too. His non-nonsense performances for the team this season have been well recieved by Mourinho and he heralded him as the best player this season for Chelsea.

His being rewarded with a contract extension proves that he is one of the most important pieces in Mourinho's jigsaw.

The industrious Mohammed Salah, ever dependable John Obi Mikel, workhorse Ramires along with the pacey and intelligent Schürrle completes this amazing set of midfielder's at Mourinho's disposal.

#2 Intimidating Attacking Force

Hazard and Costa have been in grotesque touch for Chelsea this season.

Talk of the world's best wingers and the name of Eden Hazard will crop up in the conversation someway or the other. You may tend to run short of hyperboles while trying to portray the magnificence of this brilliant talent and Chelsea are extremely lucky to have a player of Hazard's calibre in their ranks.

A player whose movement on the ball looks absolutely seamless, a player who can decide the outcome of a match single-handedly and a player who is in the category of Messi when it comes to keeping hold of the ball, Eden Hazard has all the ingredients of becoming the best to have ever graced the beautiful game.

In the ongoing English season, the Belgian has the most number of successful dribbles (54), which translates to 5.4 successful dribbles per game. The nearest anybody gets to that is Victor Moses with 3.8 dribbles per match. Hazard is also the player to be fouled the most this season, 29 fouls to be precise, which proves that he is extremely difficult to deal with on the wings.

Leading the goalscoring charts for the Londoners is the brash, impulsive yet regal Diego Costa. His influential form for Atletico Madrid last season (most goals in a season by any Atleti player) earned him a £32 million move to Stamford Bridge and the Spaniard has hit the ground running.

The striker has already scored 10 goals for his club in 9 appearances. Costa's controversial style of play has resulted in the Spaniard being targeted by players and the man is justified in taunting his taunters back.

His aggressive style of play also means that he will sustain injuries. However, all said and done, there is no scope of doubting the pedigree of this striker and his clever movement, finishing and intelligent analysis of the game are all testaments to the kind of talent he posseses.

Loic Remy and Didier Drogba complete the trio of strikers and are more than capable of taking up responsibility in Costa's absence.

#3 Jose Mourinho

The tactical prowess of Jose Mourinho will go a long way in determining if Chelsea will go invincible this season

You can either love him or hate him but one thing which you surely cannot do is ignore the genius of Jose Mourinho. His tactical brilliance, ability to irk opposition managers with his words and game changing tactical switches and substitutions, are all unmatched.

Playing in Mourinho's side as a striker could be a thankless job at times but the most important thing is that he manages to churn out the desired result, by hook or by crook.

Johan Cruyff has said, "Jose Mourinho is a negative coach. He only cares about the result and doesn't care much for good football. Mourinho is not a football coach. To play at home with seven defenders, you must be very afraid." On the other hand, these scathing attacks have propelled the media to label Mourinho as 'The Evil Genius'.

The former Internazionale manager has some brilliant player assesment skills too, as seen through the Mata-Fabregas bit of business.

Lastly, another extremely important aspect which has helped him in finding success at Chelsea is his undying love and loyalty towards the club. With a squad full of superstars, an owner who is willing to splash the cash whenever he says and comprehensive support of the fans, there seems to be no stopping this Blue juggernaut.
