5 records that might be broken in the Royal Rumble match

Announcement: Mark Henry will be mass-inducting into the Hall of Pain this Sudnay

Styles' acrobatics will keep the fans compelledThe Royal Rumble is a case study in pro-wrestling PPVs. In its 28-year run, the battle royal has such an illustrious past and a history of engendering legends. As the place where the torch to WrestleMania is lit, the Rumble is prophetic of a Superstar's future, not to mention its value to the WWE itself. But let's turn our attention away from the moral to the story itself. The Rumble has given us indelible memories over the years and some of the most celebrated in pro-wrestling history. Given its longevity, the supremely entertaining PPV obviously has its share of records, some which will probably endure for a while. Here, we take a look at some which could be rewritten in this edition

#5 Most eliminations in a Rumble

Announcement: Mark Henry will be mass-inducting into the Hall of Pain this Sudnay

Mark Henry is rumoured to be appearing in his last Royal Rumble match. A befitting legacy for the 20-year-veteran would be him being the most physically dominant star in this edition, by dispatching the most men. The record stands at 12 eliminations by Roman Reigns, followed by Kane with 11.

#4 Most Rumble appearances

A smiling demon’s never good news

With his participation in the Rumble being rumoured and most likely, the Big Red Monster will break his own record of most Royal Rumble appearances. It stands at 18. Enough said.

#3 Most time in a single Royal Rumble

Always a puncher’s chance

Most people are expecting or rather, praying for Roman’s reigns as WHC to come to an end at the Rumble. And conjecture paints the same picture, considering that Reigns will be the first entrant.

Reigns winning the Rumble would make it the third consecutive time the PPV has disappointed, and there’s not much cogency in letting him win for the second time in a row. They could, in consolation, let him be one of the last two, not least because of the fact that his in-ring skills are incredible in a back-to-the-wall situation.

#2 Longest gap between Rumble wins

Triple H would go on to become Undisputed champion after his Rumble win

The expected denouement is a returning Triple H winning the Rumble and fanning the flames of the Roman Reigns-Authority rivalry. And amongst the other, more luminous ramifications, would be the fact that Triple H’s triumph would be after 14 years, making it the longest spell between wins.

The Game won the 2002 Royal Rumble by eliminating veteran Kurt Angle. Coincidentally, he made his return at the event after he returned from injury.

#1 AJ Styles winning on debut

And the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion...

The pro-wrestling veteran will return to the WWE after 14 years. That’s right, he’s not getting his cherry popped at the Rumble. Styles wrestled 2 matches for the WWE way back in 2002 and was offered a developmental contract, but chose to place his wife’s education above it because it required him to relocate.

The Royal Rumble has never been won by a debuting Superstar, but imagine the furore if it came to fruition? Given the bleak landscape in the WWE at present, crowning Styles champion might not be such a bad idea. One thing’s for certain if it does happen; WWE’s following will increase ten-fold.
