WWE: The 5 top Undertaker storylines

The 5 top Undertaker storylines in the WWE will be discussed here. The impact of the streak ending is slowly wearing off as most of the fans have lost track of what it used to be. Apparently now, when a discussion regarding the streak comes up, it almost ends up being a mockery of Paul Heymans boast. Though this might have happened to the biggest draw that WWE had in WrestleMania, the man behind it still leaves a bigger mark. Undertakers absence is something which haunts the fans every now and then as they are still not sure whether they will be able to see the Phenom for one last time. However, it would be nice to hit the refresh button for the time being and here is the latest installment of the top five storylines series looking at the Phenom.

#5 Legend Killer (Randy Orton - 2005)

On one side it was the legend of Undertaker who hadn’t lost for a decade in WrestleMania and on the other hand it was a second generation superstar who was high on ending the legend and stamp his name as the legend killer.

Orton showed the arrogance of a youngster throughout the feud while Taker was made to look a little bit weak so that we had the feeling of the streak being in danger.

Orton was unsuccessful however in ending the streak, but he didn’t back down from going at Taker again at SummerSlam. The young lion had no respect whatsoever for the veteran and this was there to be seen in their matches.

Taker was even trapped and set on fire which didn’t stop him. The last match of the two happened at Armageddon which marked the end of the storyline.

#4 Brothers of Destruction (Kane - 1998)

It was a classic scenario of WWE hitting the family strings again as they decided to let Undertaker have a half-brother. Kane led by Paul Bearer, challenged Taker for a match but got rejected as Taker didn’t want to fight his own brother.

Then things went out of the hands quickly as Kane was willing to go to desperate limits to get his hands on Taker. It was one brother resisting the urge to fight while the other one was just keen on ending the sibling rivalry once and for all.

Kane even trapped Taker in the casket and set in on fire only for Undertaker to pull off a disappearing act. It proved to be the limit of Taker as he accepted the match with Kane and defeated him as well.

The two also had a first ever inferno match in the storyline where Taker won by setting his brother on fire.

#3 Vince McMahon is the higher power (Steve Austin - 1999)

Taker forming a stable is one thing, and when that stable was decorated with a lot of twists and turns, it ended up being a cracker.

Undertaker formed his Ministry of Darkness stable and wanted to take over WWE and Vince McMahon. The Ministry would often do some sacrifices and rituals which Taker pointed out were for the higher power.

Eventually, Taker even kidnapped Stephanie McMahon which forced Vince to align with his nemesis, Steve Austin to get rid of Taker and his creepy gang. Taker even tried to marry Stephanie only to be stopped by Austin.

But the biggest twist of the angle came at Over the Edge pay-per-view where Undertaker defeated Steve Austin with the help of McMahons. This led to the reveal that it was Vince McMahon who was pulling the strings of Taker all along.

Hero and villain being the same guy was a bit of brilliance from the writers though some of the fans still struggle to digest this one.

#2 You live in his shadow (Triple H - 2012)

Triple H and Undertaker had a match at WrestleMania with Taker’s streak on the line and Taker won. However, he had to be carried away in a stretcher after the match which was a bad mark in the pride of Taker.

He didn’t want to walk out as the winner like that and challenged Hunter for a rematch at the next WrestleMania. However, Hunter had no intentions of feeding the egoistic pride of Taker as he was busy with his office work.

In desperation, Taker even said that Shawn Michaels was a better opponent than Triple H to hurt the Hunter’s pride also. It finally paid off as Triple H accepted the match which ended up being a Hell in a Cell with Michaels as the referee.

Michaels being the referee added an extra layer to the story as he could have just helped Taker win the match so that he would feed his own ego or he could have helped his best friend.

It ended up being Taker’s win but it was a memorable story nevertheless.

#1 Youve never beaten me (Shawn Michaels - 2009)

Two of the most decorated names in the business went up against each other in this one and it was the ego cards which were played up by WWE. Though Taker had a legendary undefeated streak, the fact that he hadn’t won a match against Shawn Michaels was played up nicely.

Taker would then defeat Michaels at WrestleMania in a classic match only to extend their feud further. Now that Michaels lost, he was more determined to end the streak of Taker and prove who the better man was.

Michaels was willing to go to any limits out there and after a lot of friction between the two, Taker finally agreed to give Michaels a rematch only if he kept his career on the line. Michaels accepting the offer showed how desperate a man can be in order to get he wants.

The angle sadly ended with the farewell match of Shawn Michaels who hasn’t wrestled in a match since that day.
