Riley Gaines was born in Gallatin, Tennessee to Brad and Telisha Gaines. After completing her primary education at the Station Camp High School, she enrolled in the University of Kentucky to pursue a dental degree. Her swimming career began after qualifying for the US Nationals in 2018.
Hailing from a sports background, with her father being a football player at Vanderbilt University, and her mother playing softball at Donelson Christian Academy and Austin Peay, she followed their athletic footsteps, leaning towards swimming.
She secured a bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships that were held in Tokyo, Japan. Moreover, she also finished fourth in the 200m freestyle and sixth in the 100m freestyle events.
She showed an exceptional display of her swimming skills at the World University Games, held in Naples, Italy, in 2019 by clinching two gold medals in 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relay events. Continuing her winning streak, she secured a silver medal in the 200m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle event.
