A statistical low-down on Rafael Nadal's 35 Masters 1000 titles
Rafael Nadal clinched a record-extending 35th Masters 1000 title against first-time Masters 1000 finalist Daniil Medvedev in a lop-sided Montreal final. The win was a landmark one for the Spaniard as his back-to-back Rogers Cup titles (2018 Toronto, 2019 Montreal) marked his first ever successful title defence on hardcourt.
After relinquishing a two-set lead in his first Masters 1000 final at 2005 Miami in a defeat to Roger Federer, Nadal became the 42nd different winner of a Masters 1000 title when he triumphed over Argentine Guillermo Coria in the 2005 Monte Carlo final.
The Spaniard's maiden Masters 1000 title in the Principality kick-started a run of nine consecutive wins in Masters 1000 title matches (2005 Monte Carlo to 2007 Rome) - a feat matched only by Federer.
Nadal is one of only six players to win 10 or more Masters 1000 titles; Novak Djokovic (33), Federer (28), Andre Agassi (17), Andy Murray (14) and Pete Sampras (11) are the others.
The Spaniard is one of five players (along with Agassi, Federer, Murray and Djokovic) to have won Masters 1000 titles at seven different tournaments, with Djokovic the only one to triumph at all nine Masters 1000 tournaments.
Nadal's 35 Masters 1000 titles have come against 21 different opponents, with Federer at the receiving end on most occasions (seven) followed closely by Djokovic (six). Two titles apiece have arrived at the expense of Coria, Kei Nishikori and David Ferrer, with a further 16 players accounting for Nadal's as many Masters 1000 titles.
The 2019 Montreal win was Nadal's 10th Masters 1000 triumph on a hardcourt and a fifth consecutive win in a Masters 1000 final (2018 Monte Carlo: beat Nishikori, 2018 Rome: beat Alexander Zverev, 2018 Rogers Cup: beat Tsitsipas and 2019 Rome: beat Djokovic).
The Spaniard has the record for most Masters 1000 titles on clay (25) and the most Masters 1000 titles at a tournament (Monte Carlo - 11).
Nadal's third round win over Guido Pella in Montreal broke a tie with Federer (378) for most Masters 1000 match wins. Following his win over Medvedev in the final, the Spaniard's match win tally has swelled to 381.Modified 21 Dec 2019, 00:07 IST
